Black Star proudly marched down the hallway with Tsubaki smiling behind him. Maka and the sisters walked down the hallway, chuckling at the crazy personality of Patty. Kid and Soul stayed in silence, watching their friends.
They stood in front of the Mission Board once they approached it. Maka sighed, spotting two missions that were still available.
"Soul, should we go to Italy to get to a group of Kishin eggs or to Germany to look into one of the--" Maka began, but was interrupted by Soul.
"Italy's fine with me," he shrugged, his dull red eyes looking to the missions. Maka smiled and nodded before going to confirm their choice.
They'd been on a roll lately. In the past two months, they'd gotten up to 78 Kishin egg souls.
Maka and Soul walked along the water path towards a bridge. Normally they'd take Soul's motorcycle, but it had to be fixed because he'd accidentally left it out in the rain, allowing it to rust.
The sound of a distant scream caught Maka's attention and she sped up, Soul in hand. He called out to Maka when he spotted a huge cloud of debris and dirt rise up in the sky a few yards away.
The two of them ran towards the sight and stopped abruptly to find a man, his hands around a woman's throat. The ground caved in around the woman, her eyes empty of life as she stared at the sky. The man looked up at Maka, his eyes narrowed from the fear and anger fighting inside his soul.
"She scared me," the man moaned as he stumbled towards the meister. "I had to be rid of her..."
"Maka, what are you waiting for?" Soul asked as the man inched towards them. Maka shook her head to clear it and ran forward, swinging Soul to cut the enemy.
The mad man jumped backwards and fixed his footing to sprint forward, a crazy smile spread across his face. He swung his fist across Maka's face, making her stumble backwards. While she was distracted, he got behind her and pulled his arm back, his other hand on her shoulder.
Pain shot up through her spine and her voice caught in her throat.
"Maka?!" Soul asked.
"I'm fine," she spat out and focused on the man, trying to keep her balance. She stepped forward and swung the scythe across the man's front. Fortunately, it broke skin and made him fall backwards.
"Be careful..." Soul said cautiously as the man twitched before pushing himself up into a sitting position.
Maka sighed and was about to lunge forward when she noticed the black puddle of blood underneath her. She was about to lunge away when spikes shot up, puncturing through her skin.
Maka choked back blood as she straightened up, trying to keep her grip on her weapon. She swung towards the man, hoping that she hit the target critically.
"We did it!" Soul cheered as Maka swayed back and forth, noticing the blood soaking through her outfit. He turned to her with a proud smile before noticing her losing her balance. "Maka!"
Before she could say anything in response, her world went black.
(A/N: Sorry for such a short chapter! I'll try to make it more exciting soon. I'm just trying to ease into the main part of the story. Thanks for reading though!)
