Chapter 4 - Natalie's P.O.V
"You ready?"
I nodded, "Yeah."
Exhaling deeply, I pushed the hospital door open, Nate right behind me, and took in the sight of my ailing grandmother. She sat in a plush chair next to the window that overlooked a small garden the hospital had planted. She smiled at the both of us, "Nathan you're back!"
Everyone called him either Nathaniel or Nate, only Granny could call him Nathan and get away with it.
"Hey Gran," He smiled and moved past me, crouching down next to her, "How are you feeling?"
"Just grand," She joked and my heart nearly broke in two. She turned to me, "Well get over here Natalie!"
With a timid smile, I walked over and sat in the chair across from her, "Dad told us that the doctors said you have a month."
She nodded and took my left hand in her right and Nate's right hand in her left, "I don't care what the doctors say. I'll live for however much longer I can hold on. I've lived my life exactly how I wanted to, and the only thing I'll miss and regret, is not seeing you two get married, or Natalie graduating. And at best, I'll be able to see your grandfather again."
The door to the room opened and a nurse walked in, "Hello Mrs. Brooks."
Granny smiled, "Good morning Sally. Is it time already?"
She nodded and Gran stood up with some help from Nate.
"I've got to go get some chemo. I'll see you two some other time," She smiled and walked out of the room with Sally.
Nate sighed and ran a hand down his face.
"Ready to go?" I asked him. He nodded and led the way down to the first floor and out to his car. As we drove down the roads, it was silent in the car, not even the radio on. It was always depressing when we came from visiting Granny.
I hate cancer.
When we passed up our street, I looked over to Nate, "Did you forget the way home?"
"I figured we'd go get some lunch. You can tell me more about this Noah Hall character while we're eating," He tells me without taking his eyes off the road. He's always been a careful, steady driver.
We pulled into the parking lot of Bob Evan's and I smiled; we always came here together.
We walked in and slid into a booth. Almost immediately our waitress came over and took our orders, letting us know they'd be out in 10-15 minutes.
"So, what does he look like?" He asked.
"Tall, built, long-ish hair, light brown and blue eyes. The way he holds himself is considered intimidating, apparently," I informed him.
He shook his head, "Sounds like an asshole."
"You've never even met the guy," I laughed.
Nate shrugged, "Okay, so tell me what you did to him."
"Well, I kind of rigged his locker and made it explode so he was covered in pink glitter, flour, with an egg. That was win number one," I paused, "Win number two was when I dumped a small bottle of syrup on his head and embarrassed him in front of all of first period."
"Those are such middle school pranks!" He exclaimed.
I rolled my eyes, "He tried to get me with a pie to the face by rigging my locker!"
