We explored the tunnels of the ship we were in for a few minutes before we came to the place where I was tortured. The Doctor’s eyes scanned the cold room quickly, but I could tell he was confused.
“This is where they brought me.” I whispered, my voice hollow as unwanted memories started to creep into my mind. “They bound me to the table over there and put this liquid in my veins. It felt like acid. I…” My voice trailed off when I noticed The Doctor’s face. All traces of humour and lightness were gone. His jaw was clenched and his eyes were dark, darker than I’d ever seen before. He looked murderous.
“They did this to you?” He asked, his hands wrapped tightly into fists to hide the shaking. “They hurt you?” I nodded slowly, reaching for his hand. I didn’t like seeing him so angry.
“I’ll kill them! I’ll kill them all!” He shouted, marching away from me and further into the room. “Where are they?” He yelled.
This sparked some curiosity inside me. Where were all the cyber men? They had to be around here somewhere.
“Good question.” I remarked, walking over to him. “Where are all the cyber men?” His anger slowly receded as curiosity set into his mind. I could tell he was thinking, trying to decipher the answer. He seemed lost, though.
Before either of us could make any assumptions, a voice called out in the darkness.
“The cyber men are resting, waiting for orders from the commander.” Its voice was cold and robotic, the same voice that brought fear to my heart every time I heard it. The voice I heard before they tortured me.
The cyber men stepped out of the dark side of the room and walked up to The Doctor and I. Everything about them seemed so sadistic and cold that it shocked me that this creature even existed.
“Resting? What do you mean by resting? And who’s this commander you’re going on about?” The Doctor questioned, taking another step forward. The cyber men didn’t back down though. It just stared at him with a cold determination and sat silently. When it did speak, it felt like ages had passed.
“The commander was killed. The cyber men take orders from the commander. The cyber men need a new commander.” It responded. I shuddered at the emptiness of the creature, but The Doctor only looked confused, not scared like I was.
“Since when do the cyber men take orders?” He asked curiously. I wanted to hit him for provoking the thing, but I held back.
“Since the commander told us to.” The cyber man responded. The Doctor groaned and threw his hands in the air.
“What kind of an answer is that?” He asked angrily. The cyber man said nothing, obviously not understanding the question.
“Okay, so where are the cyber men resting?” He tried again, searching for any answer he could find. This was a question the cyber man could answer.
“In this ship.” It responded curtly. “There are one billion cyber units on board right now. They await orders from the commander.” My eyebrows scrunched together.
“If all of the cyber men are resting, then why are you here talking to us? What about the other ones who helped with my testing?” I asked. The Doctor sent me a nod of approval at my question.
“We were chosen to locate the leader. A trap was placed to lure The Doctor in because we knew that he would bring with him the perfect commander.” I felt a deep sense of cold wash over me.
“How could you know that?” I demanded, taking another step towards the cyber men. The Doctor pulled me back, though, before I could get too close. “How could you know that I would be here with him now? I only just met him tonight, or, this morning. I’m not entirely sure with the whole time travel thing.” The Doctor chuckled, but the cyber man was silent.
“It was foretold that one hundred years from the Last Night, The Doctor would bring with him a girl: someone with the intelligence to lead our race from this hole in the ground to the top of this world.” I shook my head, shock numbing my mind.
“When was this foretold?” The Doctor asked slowly.
“Ninety nine years ago.” It responded, sending my brain into a wild frenzy of thinking.
“So you need me as your commander just because some prophecy written a hundred years ago said that I’d be with him?” I questioned.
“That is correct.” The cyber man confirmed. The Doctor held his hand up in front of him, pointing lightly at the creature.
“What do you intend to do with her? How will you make her your commander?” I could tell by the look in his eyes that he already knew the answer to both questions, yet he still asked them.
The cyber man’s hand turned to a fist and I felt as if that fist was clenching my heart. I reached over and grabbed The Doctor’s hand. He squeezed back lightly just as the cyber man responded. Its words sent a shock through my entire body, so strong that the world spun for minutes afterwards.
“We need the female’s brain.”
