Sometimes love is not enough
And the road gets tough,
I don't know why

Lana Del Rey // Born To Die

Okay, so this chapter may seem like it's come too early, but don't panic. Let it happen.

//

Exactly five days after Sirius Black decided he liked me enough, James and I were called into Professor Dumbledore's office at exactly 3:37 am. McGonagall had collected James from his bed first, then me from the fireplace in the Slytherin Common room, where Ezra and I were testing each other on our Charms knowledge.
"Lumos," he said, reading off the side of the flashcard I could see.
"Light. Come on, Ezzie, you're meant to be testing me, not insulting me," I said, just as McGonagall and James came in.
"Miss Potter? Professor Dumbledore requires your presence," she said. Behind her, James was staring at literally everything that he saw. As a Gryffindor, this would be extremely interesting to him. "Um, okay," I said. I turned back round to Ezra.
"We'll carry on tomorrow," he promised, gathering up the useless flashcards that we'd made. I nodded, and we bid each other goodnight. The only person left in the common room was Marie, who was enjoying me and Ezra insulting each other via flashcards. I waved goodnight to her, before following my brother and his head of house out of the room.

James and I walked behind McGonagall, having a whisper conversation.
"What's this about? You've haven't done anything seriously stupid, have you?" I asked my twin, giving him a look. Sometimes, his pranks could go too far.
"No. Remus does know when to stop us. No, I don't know what this is about either," he said. Something in my body was now panicking, with my stomach making me feel as if I wanted to scream and cry and laugh all at the same time, though I had no clue why. These were dark times, and anything could happen. We stopped talking, partly because we were there. McGonagall ushered us in, before closing the door behind us.

I'd only been in Dumbledore's office once. It looked the exact same now, with there difference of it being dark and my dad standing there. "Dad!" James and I exclaimed at once, and rushed over to hug him. My dad chuckled and took a few steps back- though we were close as a family, James and I were getting a little too big for him now. Well, James was. We stepped out the hug when James asked, "Where's mum?" Dad took a sharp breath in. This was when Dumbledore spoke up.
"Miss and Mr. Potter, your father is here to take you to St. Mungo's."
"Why?" James asked. Dad took a deep breath.
"I'll tell you when we get there," he said. pointing towards the fire place. I guess we were to Floo there.

Once at St. Mungo's, James proceeded to pester Dad again.
"Honestly, Dad, why are we here? You know Katherine hates hospitals," James said, pointing to me. I nodded, walking fast. I wanted to get out of here, really.
"We're going to see your mother," Dad said, and that was when I knew why my stomach was making that feeling; why I was worried.

I don't remember the name of the ward, but I remember it was 3:42 a.m. We walked in to see Mum lying on the bed with a green tinge to her skin, and covered in spots.

Dragon pox.

I quickly ran to the bed, but not before a nurse put on a covering around me. She quickly moved on to James (who'd frozen on the spot) and took her time putting one on him. "Mum," I whispered. I felt like crying. I knew there was a cure, but Mum was so old, she wouldn't survive it. I sat on the chair next to her, and she put and arm around me, although the situation just have been uncomfortable for her. It was silent for a few minutes, until James spoke.
"This is a joke," he said to Dad. "You're lying, and this is a joke to upset Catherine and I. This isn't Mum."
"James," me, Mum and Dad said simultaneously.
"Jem," Mum said, taking his childhood nickname. "Come here." She held her other arm out. Hesitantly, he wondered over and sat on the other side of the hospital bed, looking lost. He put his head on her covered shoulder. "Jem. Cat. This is going to be hard. I've got dragon pox, and I'm going to die. But it's okay. Because Daddy will still be here, and you will have each other. You've got to look after each other. Okay? You've got to take care, because it's a dangerous world out there, and you'll only have each other."
"Mum," I said again. She was making this more dramatic than it should have been.
"I've written my will, you'll see what it is. Just do me proud, okay? I love you both. So much," she said, and then we were all silent.

Until 5:09 a.m., when I started screaming and everything was wrong and it wasn't okay.
