Leaving Rochester broke my heart. But I had to leave. It was time to move on again. As I drove past the sign, all the memories came flooding back...
"Rosalie, Katerina and Alexander! Come here now!" Our mother called. One by one, the three of us ran out from the woods, whizzing past mother.
We sat down to dinner, like every night, like a normal family. We were never normal.
"Mother, may I please go to Vera's tonight?" Asked my older sister, Rosalie. Before my mother could answer, I knew what she would say. The same as she always did.
"Of course you can darling." I knew it.
"Mother, can I go with Rose?" I asked, also knowing that answer.
"Maybe next time." Correct again.
There was no next time. In fact, that was the last night of a half normal life. The last night I saw my sister. Rose never came home. Vera claimed she left her house. Some of our neighbours saw her with her fiancee, Royce King. There was a lot of blood found on a road, next to her bag. She was rumored to be killed.
After that, my life was never the same.
"Father? Have you seen Alex? I can't find him anywhere? He isn't at the hospital with mother either." I called, as I looked for my father.
"Oh, Katerina dear. We need to talk." As we sat down at the table, I noticed his red rimmed eyes. He had been crying. He never cries.
"Father, what is it?"
"Your mother, and Alexander, they've left."
"Left?!"
"Yes."
"But why?"
"Because, well, we are in trouble. They can't fight."
"Yes they could!"
"No, honey, not against these people, they couldn't."
With that, I stormed upstairs. First I lose my sister, then my mother and brother. Life wasn't fair.
Remembering these memories wanted me to cry, but I couldn't. Not any more.
I finally started living again, a week after I heard about my mother and brother's departure. I decided I had had enough. I shoved all my savings into my back pocket and went downstairs for some food. I never made it to the kitchen. As I neared the bottom of the stairs I saw flashes of light. Two men were in my house. They were twice the size of my father, but yet he continued to duel with them. I think I whimpered as I edged towards the duel. My father had turned round and screamed run at me. I didn't hesitate. I ran. The fastest I had ever ran. As I reached the edge of the woods surrounding our house, I glanced back towards the house to see a flash of green and my father falling.
That was in 1933. It was now 2012. And I was still 18.
