Two days had gone past, and all I had done was fetch new bandages or take one of the students temperatures. On the bright side, all the students were stopping by to introduce themselves to me. Madam Pomfrey had told me I seemed most popular among the older boys. I couldn't help but chuckle to myself when I heard of it.
I was in my room, having a blood bag when there was a voice calling for Madam Pomfrey in the hospital wing. Wiping any traces of blood that might have lingered on my mouth I headed into the hospital wing where a young girl with bushy hair was looking frantic.
"Madam Pomfrey is visiting an ill family member, can I be of any help?" I asked as I approached the girl, straightening my uniform.
"Oh, well yes. A boy was injured in our Care of Magical Creatures class. Hagrid is bringing him up now." She told me.
I nodded and got one of the beds ready for the new patient.
"Owwww! My father is going to hear about this!" A whiny masculine voice called from the doorway.
"Put him over here." I told the giant, Hagrid. As I watched Hermione smile at me before leaving.
He did as I said before leaving the hospital wing.
"It hurts!" The boy moaned again.
"I'm sure it does." I laughed as I approached him. "Do you mind if I have a look? I'll try and not hurt you." I asked before I made any move to examine his arm which seemed to be bleeding heavily.
"Sure." He muttered.
He winced as I touched his arm, I detected a small break and a few scratches which were currently oozing blood. I went and washed my hands before I washed the blood from his cuts. "So what's your name?" I asked him, as I attempted to take him mind off the pain.
"Draco Malfoy, but you can call me Draco." He said as he watched my every move.
"Very well, Draco." I said as I put the bloody cloths in the bin and went to get a vial from one of the cupboards.
"What's your name?" He asked me as I cam back over.
"Take this. It will help with the pain." I said as I handed his good arm the vial. I watched him take it and his look of pain began to ease. "My name is Katrina Hale, but you call me Madam Hale." I told him with a smile as I retrieved a sling.
"Nice name." He smiled at me.
"This may hurt, but I have to re set the bone." I told him. He nodded and I used my wand to set the bone back together. I wasn't satisfied until I heard the snap of the bones joining and the look of uneasiness cross his face. "You'll need to wear this for a couple of days and stay here until Madam Pomfrey checks you over."
"Will I be okay?" He asked me as he made himself comfortable.
"I'm sure you'll live." I joked as I tidied everything up.
By the time Madam Pomfrey arrived, I had dealed with a boy who had violently vomited over himself and a first year who fell down the stairs.
"Sorry I took so long Katrina, nothing serious I hope?" Madam Pomfrey asked as she came bustling through the door.
"A vomiter, a clumsy first year and Mister Malfoy." I replied as I jerked my head in Draco's direction.
"Mister Malfoy! What have you done now?" Madam Pomfrey asked as she took her coat off and dumped it on the bed next to Draco.
"The great oaf nearly had me killed" He shouted. Madam Pomfrey turned to look at me for an explanation.
"Hagrid was showing them Hippogriffs and one attacked Draco." I explained, gaining a smile.
"Did you set his arm?" She asked as she read over my paperwork.
"Of course" I replied.
"Well then Draco, you are free to go." Madam Pomfrey dismissed Draco.
I was on corridor duty that night. I kept to the shadows, out of the moon light. I hadn't came across anybody out of bed the whole night. As I was walking along one of the tower corridors, I heard voices. Both were female. I crept along by the wall, staying out of vision. I strained my hearing to catch snippets of their conversations.
"That was my foot!"
"I don't understand why we can't use our wands for light!"
"Because we'll get caught!"
I laughed to myself and stopped where I was, knowing they were only a few feet in front of me.
"You got caught anyway." I whispered, lighting my wand to see startled expressions on the two girls faces.
"Madam Hale?" Asked the first girl.
"Hermione? What are you doing out of bed?" I asked her, eying her red headed friend.
"Me and Ginny couldn't sleep." She explained.
"Follow me." I said briskly as I led both girls to McGonagall's office.
"Please Madam Hale, we don't want to be in trouble." The red head girl, Ginny moaned.
I ignored her as I knocked on the door of McGonagoll's office. I could hear her heartbeat speed up as she woke up, her feet padding across the floor as she fetched her dressing gown and her slippers, a minute later, her eye appeared in the peep hole on the door.
"Katrina. It is almost two am!" She scolded me as she swung the door open.
"Sorry Professor, but I caught these two wondering the corridor." I said sympathetically as I gestured to the two girls.
Her gaze travelled to Hermione and Ginny and she nodded. "In you come. All of you." She said as she held her door open for the three of us to enter.
"Now, Miss Weasley, care to explain why you were out of bed?" McGonagoll asked as she sat in her seat.
"We couldn't sleep, so we went on a walk." She muttered sheepishly.
McGonagoll's gaze settled on Hermione. "Miss Granger, I am appalled. You know that it is forbidden to be out of bed at these hours. You of all people should know this." She said sternly, but regrettably.
"I'm sorry, Professor." Hermione apologised.
"Well both of you will attend detention with me after dinner tomorrow evening." She said before turning to me. "Madam Hale, can you escort these two back to their common room?" She asked me.
"Of course." I replied from the doorway. "Follow me girls."
The two girls muttered their farewells to Professor McGonagoll before following me. I never realised that none of our wands were lit, and it was pitch black until Ginny spoke up.
"Madam Hale? How on earth can you see in this?" She called, roughly a centimetre away from where I was standing.
"Eat your carrots. I have good eyesight because of it." I told her, fighting a laugh.
She never replied, but I could sense her giving a funny look to Hermione from behind.
Once we had reached the Gryffindor Common room entrance, I bid the girls farewell before continuing my duties.
