In the end I of course found Liesel and Rudy.
They had just finished Christmas with their four children and the grandchild who was still resident in her mother. They were happy when they left. Dreaming about their soon to arrive family member.
They went to bed that night like any ignorant couple, with a peck on the cheek and a quick "I love you" before turning off the lamp.
I am sure Liesel in her brilliance realized how kind I was when I took her and Rudy. I didn't leave him alone without her.
I'm sorry anyone who still cares about this story but I am (sadly) over The Book Thief and while it is one of my favorite books I have no inspiration for this story.
