Gray eyes. His eyes gazing towards me was making me nervous. He looked comfortable though, sitting there gauging my reaction.
"What I told you was a lie." He directly stated.
I think I knew what he's talking about but I got to make sure, "Which one?" I asked, raising an eyebrow.
He didn't even flinch at my reaction. "When I told you that I like you only as a friend."
I took a sip of water. "Why did you lie?" I asked again, this conversation is quickly turning into interrogation.
I didn't mean to, but I really wanna know.
He looked straight into my eyes, now more serious. "I lied in a futile attempt to protect you." He explained vaguely.
What? I don't understand.
Confusion must be evident on my face because he continue to elaborate. "People who got close to me are in danger. You see, in mixed martial arts, everything is fair and square inside the ring. Until somebody took it personally, not everybody though. Just some. Ambitious fighters who threatens the safety of one's family, friends, or even loved ones."
He closed his eyes and pinched the bridge of his nose, as if he's having a headache. "Not everybody wants to play clean. There's always somebody who wants to get their hands dirty." His fists were now tightly clenched on the table.
Rhett was usually calm and collected, but right now he's fuming. I placed my hand over his. He sighed, and seemed to relax at my touch.
"I used to have friends. Lots of them. But when I joined MMA and had my very first championship, my opponent was beyond pissed. He underestimated me because I'm a newbie. He took it out on my friend, several days after the match, we found my friend in a ditch beaten and badly bruised. He was hospitalized for a few days, he confirmed to me that it was my opponent in MMA who did it." He looked really affected as he told his story, and I bet he felt responsible for everything.
My heart ached for him. "That's so twisted. He couldn't accept that he lost to you so he went for your friend instead? Where's your friend?" I inquired.
I half-expected he was gonna say Ethan, because he's the only one whom I've known close to him.
"Not a friend anymore." He stated. "That's why I didn't have many friends, it's too dangerous."
My tears are beginning to fall. He caught it with his hands wiping it away.
"That's why I'm avoiding you in the first place." He chuckled lightly, "But you seem to be everywhere I go. At the freshmen acquaintance party, in my class, joining the same club as me."
That's because I'm stalking you, silly. I almost laugh. Does that mean I'm putting myself in danger by being near him?
I'm slowly understanding him much better now. He didn't want us to be 'more' because it could put me in a dangerous position. Easy target as they say. I shivered just thinking about it.
As if sensing my worry, "I'll protect you no matter what." He said softly.
I smiled, "You always do. You did plenty of times already." I replied, remembering the things he did for me, the times he saved me and protected me.
"Now I don't want you to leave my sight. You don't know how much I tried to resist being near you, thinking it's for your own good." He stated, caressing my cheek. "I'm gonna risk it all now just to be with you. I hope you enjoy having a possesive boyfriend from now on."
He smiled slowly, "Cause that's what I'm gonna be."
My heart jumped right out of my chest.
