As time passed by, people caught on to the relationship between John and Sherlock. Naturally, there was a fair amount of teasing come out of it, but Sirius, James, Peter and Remus (or The Marauders, as they called themselves) just seemed pleased. Mostly because they were right.
"I totally called it. Remus, you owe me six galleons" was Sirius' first reaction to hearing the news.
"Did you guys seriously make bets on my sexuality?" John sighed in minor annoyance.
"No" James smirked, stifling laughter "why the hell would we do that?"
Meanwhile, Remus was fishing around his bag for the money he owed.
"It's not too late to back out, you know" Sherlock whispered to John the day of the dance.
"And why would I back out?" John laughed back. Sherlock grabbed John's hand replied.
"Free up your options. I noticed how Maeve Walters from my house was looking at you"
"But Maeve's not my type" John remarked "I mean, she's lovely and all, but she's not you"
"Keep in mind that I don't dance" Sherlock reminded him.
"I'll make you" John smirked. "Now shush. We need to work"
                              -----------------
"Are you nearly ready, Sherlock?" John called. they were already ten minutes late.
"Stop being impatient. you try having hair like mine and making it look presentable!" Sherlock snapped back. John rolled his eyes and sat back down.
Finally, after what seemed like an age, Sherlock stepped out of the room, wearing black dress robes with his hair combed and gelled down. He smiled at John before gripping his hand and pulling him through the castle.
There seemed to be something he was trying to keep hidden fro John. Even with Sherlock's hair, it shouldn't take him half an hour to get ready.
But John tried to forget about it. They went to the dance, and they had a good time. John even managed to make Sherlock get up and dance for a song or two. All in all, it was great, and everyone had a good time. Sooner than anticipated, it was 12:30 and students were leaving at an alarming rate, leaving Sherlock and John to make up their own minds.
"Going back to our dorms means that we can't spend time together" Sherlock pointed out.
"We have class tomorrow, though." John yawned "You may be able to work on minimal sleep, but most of us need at least five hours"
"Well, then stay for another hour and a half. there. Five hours." Sherlock calculated.
                              "Sherlock" John warned.
"Ugh fine" Sherlock finally agreed, lifting himself off the chair "at least let me walk you to your dorm"
"Romantic" John teased. "Come on then"
And so John went to bed. But Sherlock, however, stayed up, staring at the single bit of paper he had received this morning over breakfast. You see, Sherlock never got mail from his family, and his birthday wasn't any time soon.
Sherlock Holmes. You probably thought I was gone. Heh, funny what having connections can get you out of. Well, have fun, I guess. This won't be the last you'll hear from me. I promise.
Keep him close. I know you'd hate to lose him.
'til the next time, Sherlock Holmes.
