Chapter 8

We walked through the forest on a dirt trail.  You can hear the birds singing all around you, enveloping you in their sweet symphony.  The smell of nature is all around.  The trees and the flowers smell like nature’s perfume.  It makes me feel at ease.

The wind whips through my hair as we walk up a steep hill.  Nate and I are way up front while Landon is helping Blake who isn’t as skilled of a hiker.  Every time I look back they get further and further away and when I look again I can’t see them anymore.

“Umm…” I start, turning around.

Nate stops and turns around with me.

“Where are your brothers?” I laugh.

“Well Blake isn’t much of a hiker…”

“Then what’s Landon’s excuse?”

“Someone needs to help Blake,” Nate smirks.

“Then why don’t you?” I ask.

“If you want Landon here instead of me then why don’t you just say so?” Nate asks, getting angry.

“Whoa, when did I say that?” I ask shocked at his tone.

“Trust me, I’ve seen the way you look at him,” he growls.

If only he knew I felt for him not Landon.

“That’s crazy!” I say getting angry.

“No it’s not!  You can’t deny it Jessica!” he says.

“Think whatever the hell you want Nate, but I know the truth,” I say walking away from him and rolling my eyes.

I hear him pace behind me as I walk away.  I can hear him pick up his pace as he tries to catch up, so I try to walk faster.  But before I can, he grabs my hand and spins me around.  He pins me to the closest tree and kisses me.

The kiss makes my lips tingle and my heart beat faster and faster.  My breath gets caught in my throat.  It sends shivers all throughout my body and when he breaks away, I want more.

“I’m… I’m sorry,” he says backing away, holding his hands out.

“Excuse me?  Your sorry?” I almost yell.

            He seems taken aback.

“Yeah…” he starts but I cut him off.

“You have no right to be sorry Nate.  How dare you say you’re sorry,” I yell before sprinting back down the hill towards Landon and Blake.

I will myself not to cry and to my surprise, the tears don’t come.

When I get finally reach the boys, Blake is holding on to a tree, guzzling his water.  He is soaked in sweat and gasping for air.  Landon, on the other hand, is leaning up against the tree next to Blake’s looking calm and collected.

When they hear me approach and they both look up at me.  They must see something in my face because Blake immediately asks me,

“What’s wrong Jess?”

“Nothing,” I say looking at my feet.

“Yeah bullshit,” Blake says walking over toward me.
