I just sat down, too lazy to stand up and face Death directly. I was too tired emotionally to face him again.
"Cheer up." He simply said and I could feel him getting closer to me.
His cold presence surrounded me and the stench of death was unavoidable. Cheer up? Since when did he say that. I couldn't stop myself from smiling.
Here I am, sitting inside my mind, Death telling me to cheer up.
How low could I sink?
"Low enough to reach you."
That voice... It couldn't be....could it?
I slowly turned around, afraid to see what is standing behind me. I was looking straight to the ground and slowly stood up, still afraid to lose that voice. With shaking hands, I grabbed Death beside me, his black cloak freezing my hand.
Steadily, I looked up and my eyes, filled with tears, started to search up and down the person in front of me. My hand went to my mouth to suppress the noises that tried to escape. For the first time Death did not try to steal my emotions, or rather my pain. He wanted me to see that man standing here, he wanted me to see him and suffer... seeing the the man well and alive.
"Mathias?" My voice was so quiet that I doubt anybody heard me. Papa did not move towards me, but he did smile and nodded his head.
I couldn't take this any longer. I fell to my knees. Bending, my forehead touched the cold floor once again and a load scream left my mouth. My clenched fists hit the ground again and again.
"Why would you show me this? WHY?!" I screamed and cried.
"Because I don't want you to forget." Death said and his cold hands embraced me. "I don't want you to forget this."
Another familiar voice was heard together with my childlike laughing. Though I knew I'll regret it later, I still looked up and saw Lukas holding me up as a child, smiling and laughing, he kissed both of my cheeks and then handed me to Mathias.
"Please stop." I begged.
The image in front of me slowly started to burn, but the smiles on their faces were still intact. They looked at me with eyes full of love and sadness, little me went towards me and extended his hand.
"Don't forget me, us, and all the stuff we used to share!" He said and smiled. A single tear left his eyes and he was completely gone. All that was left was ashes and the regret I felt.
Why did I allow this to happen?
"Please stop." I said again and looked away from the scene and towards the familiar white floor that was now covered in ashes.
"Why should I stop? This brings you both happiness and sadness, exactly the energy I need to live. Remember that I'm you and you're me. So please, don't forget. The pain that we both share is what compels us to continue to live and I'll do anything to survive."
