Chapter 4: Out of Town Girl

All you gotta do is read the signs
The exit is to the right,
I don't know your name
But love your smile,
I love the way you put it down, down, down
If you wanna know I like an out of town girl, girl, girl, yeah, yeah, yeah.

“Your mom is here,” My boss told me. “I’ll close tonight.”

“Are you sure?” I asked. “It’s supposed to be my night to close.”

“You have school tomorrow,” he told me, “so don’t worry about it.”

“Thank you,” I smiled.

I finished cleaning up the table I was working on when a customer came in the door right behind my mom.

“Mel?” My boss asked me.

“Yeah?”

“I’m unloading the dishwasher can you serve him a drink before you leave?”

“Yeah,” I yelled back to him, “I’ll get him a drink.”

“You ready?” Mom asked me as she sat down at the counter.

“I just need to get this guy a drink and then I can go.”

“Okay,” mom nodded, “that’s fine.”

I work at a small restaurant in town run by Caroline’s dad. I’m the only other employee he has because it’s such a small restaurant. The customer that just walked in looks really familiar. He is wearing a hat, sunglasses, and a big jacket. I walked up to him and handed him a menu.

“I’m Melanie. Can I get you something to drink?”

The guy smirked and took off his glasses.

“Oh my God,” I backed up a step. “I’m sorry I didn’t recognize you.”

“It’s funny how you recognized me the first time we met, but you were completely oblivious this time.”

I chuckled a little, “In my defense it’s been a long shift.”

He smiled, “I’ll have whatever kind of cola you have.”

“Okay. Why haven’t you left town yet?” I asked him as I grabbed a can of cola and set it in front of him. I grabbed a cup, added ice to it, and set that in front of him too.

“We have a few days here before leaving for the next town. How was the McDonalds the other day?”

“Wait what? How’d you know I went to McDonalds?” I asked him, but then thought for a second and groaned. “You’re the reason there were so many people there! Oh my God you owe me for my doctor’s bill.”

“What doctor’s bill?” he laughed.

“They pushed me over,” I said, “And I landed on my arm. I sprained my wrist and had to go to the doctor.”

“Shit,” he cursed. “Seriously?”

I nodded, “I hate big crowds like that.”

“I had no idea. I’m sorry.”
