Chapter 10: Be Alright

-Melanie’s Point of View-

“I did something bad,” Caroline came up to me the next day in class.

“What did you do?” I asked.

“So you know we’re staying in California for a few days right? Just to see all of campus.”

I nodded.

“Well I signed you up for a gig.”

“What?!”

“I sent the video to a few places in California and one really loved it. You have a gig there the first night after our tour of the campus.”

“I’ve only written a few songs I can’t play a gig.”

“Yes you can,” she said, “Sing your original songs and sing a few covers. You’ll be great. You know you want to do this. Don’t you want to find out what the public thinks?”

I bit my lip.

“That’s what I thought. It’s one gig. You’ll get $60 dollars and 90 percent of the tips during your performances.”

“Okay,” I smiled, “I could use the money.”

“Yay!” she hugged me.

“But you owe me for this.”

“I don’t want to hear anything until after the gig.”

I rolled my eyes, “Fine.”

“Good,” she smiled.

            I grabbed my books from my bag and walked to my first class. Now that the big showcase is over I can’t wait to tour the campus. I’ve already started packing for the trip. Caroline and Ben have both applied to the college; Ben hasn’t heard anything yet and Caroline was put on the waiting list. I really hope they get in. College wouldn’t be the same without either of them. My parents and teachers keep telling us not to get our hopes up because almost everybody in our class is going to be separated and going in different directions. I didn’t take their advice though. I took Melody’s advice over theirs. Ben is going to school for directing and videos so he has a better chance at getting into our school; especially using all the footage of my performances. He’s even directed and made a lot of music videos for me for school projects. Caroline, on the other hand, isn’t sure what she wants to do but she loves acting. She’s been in all the school’s plays, but that’s the only real school activity she’s been in. She doesn’t have many other things to add to her resume or applications when applying to college. Melody told me right away that she bets Ben will get in to the college and Caroline won’t end up getting off the waiting list for quite a while. So just a few months from now, we will all be graduating and leaving this school forever. It’s a scary thought. I’ve loved going to school here; I don’t think I’m ready to graduate yet. Sure all my education says I’m ready, but mentally I’m not. I will be moving to California; the real world. I will be living on my own and trying to figure out how to pay my own bills and get good grades at the same time. It’s a huge transition.
