Chapter 1

"Goodnight Kathey, I'll see you tomorrow morning!" I yelled to my manager Kathey at the public library. I quickly slipped on my sweater before walking outside in the brisk wind. I could see my breath as I heaved my heavy school backpack and continued my trek downtown.

Being a senior in high school, I never would have thought that there would be so much homework. I just have no time to just breathe and do something for myself. I was just going from school to work after school, and then I'd go home at 9:30pm. This would only leave me an hour for homework, eating or taking a shower. Not to mention making sure my sisters are fed, have homework done and are ready for bed.

So you could say I don't really have a life. I don't really have any friends as I was always shy, so I avoided talking to people most of the time. I didn't play any sports. I have very bad asthma, so that was crossed off the list.

I only sang in the shower or in my room-as the music was louder than my voice, so in that case, I couldn't hear myself sing, but I know I sang horrible.

The only thing I could draw was stick people. Why put detail in stuff when you can just draw people with a stick leg and arm.

I enjoyed writing poems if I had any free time, but I wasn't really passionate about it. I won a few awards for the best poem in English over my three years in high school, but I stopped writing when I found something I was in love with. Photography.

Photography was the best thing I had ever done. Best thing I had ever found. I started taking random pictures with my cell phone whenever I became bored in my sophomore year. As days went by, I couldn't stop taking pictures.

So, I saved enough money for an actual camera. A best-selling photography camera. I wouldn't leave without it. You never know when a picture idea will pop in your head.

Walking to my car I would see nearby shops closing for the day, like Mike's Coffee Shop, The Antique Store, and the town's Best Burgers. Like usual, I stop at the coffee shop to say hi.

"It's nice to see you again Kacey." Mike said as he saw me walk into the shop.

"Nice to see you too. How was the shop today?" I asked, sitting down on the couch that stood in front of the fireplace.

"It has been busy like normal! How's your senior year going so far?" he asked, handing me his special hot chocolate.

"Well I never thought it would be this hard. Especially with school, work, and taking care of my sisters, I have no time for myself." I sighed while taking a sip.

"Bring the girls over sometime, I'll watch them so you can relax."

"I don't want to do that. Alexia just started middle school, she's moody a lot and Taryn is in pre-school, so she has quite the imagination. They're both a handful, I wouldn't want to leave you with them." I smiled, realizing I'd better get home as Alexia and Taryn were home alone.

"I'm sure they're not that bad. Just give me a call whenever."

"Okay thank you so much."

"When are you going to take more pictures? I've had my customers ask when you were gonna have more. Kacey, they love your work." He smiled looking at my wall of pictures on the far end wall of the coffee shop.

"Whenever I have time, I will be sure to take more. Just with school work and working at the 'Public Library' I feel like I've let this big hole in my heart grow bigger. I love taking pictures, it's just the other things that are more important right now."

"No rush, an artist always takes their time. Well, get going, don't want to keep your sisters waiting." He smiled and gave me a hug before I reunited with the cold weather.

"Bye Mike." I smiled back and headed once again to my car.

By the time I got inside the apartment it was almost ten. I was sure my sisters were worried about me. I always arrive home at 9:30. I sped home as warm air in my car melted my frozen hands and face.

Opening the door I saw Alexia and Taryn asleep on the couch. I picked up Taryn and tucked her in bed. I then grabbed Alexia, good thing she was a tiny girl or I have no idea how I'd get her to bed. Tucking her in was difficult. She kept on moving-making me almost drop her. Thank goodness she slipped into her bed. I pulled the blankets over her body and shut the door.

I knew I should do my chemistry homework, but I was exhausted so I went to bed instead. Walking in my room I stared at the picture frame on my dresser. I stared at a family I once had.

When I was ten, my parents both died in a fire. Taryn, Alexia and I were gone at the time this happened. We were all on a trip to the zoo with the neighbors. Getting home we went to a house that was there no more.

Taryn was only a few months old so she didn't know what happened. Alexia broke into tears, as she was attached to mom.

Me on the other hand, I tried to fight back tears. I wanted to be strong, to set a great example for my little sisters.

Margret our neighbor decided to take us in. I felt like it was my fault because my sisters never got to grow up with parents. When I got a job and raised enough money, I was able to buy a small apartment with two bedrooms and a bathroom. I had Margret to back me up if I needed help but so far I'd been doing fine.

It had been eight years since my parents passed. It had been hard living without them, but my sisters helped me get through it. As for the three of us, we are closer than ever.

Sometimes they ask me questions about them, all I can say is how much they loved us. It hurt to talk about them, knowing I was with them longer, I had more memories with them, especially with my dad.

My dad and I were two peas in a pod. I was so close with him; you wouldn't see me without him. He was a professional photographer so he would always show me how the camera operated. Back then I didn't really care about taking pictures, but now that I love taking pictures, I wish my dad was here to help me.

Finally closing my eyes I went to sleep for a better tomorrow. It felt good to get some nice sleep. Then again, school was what would wake up my dreams.
