The Vase

It was unusually quiet in her room, so Adira opened the door and peeked inside. It was empty and uncomfortably still.

"Ammon said he was coming up here, right?" Adira asks Shafir. He nodded as he walked into the room.

"Did the idiot get lost?" He mutters under his breath. She shoves past him into the room. It looked as if it hadn't been used in years. Instinctively, she pulls out her daggers. Shafir does the same with his sword.

"Look around. I have a bad feeling about this." She says. Her brother nods and starts walking around the room. Something in the room didn't seem right. Something didn't belong. There was a vase oddly placed in the balcony edge. She walked over to examine it. It was a brown vase with black (whatever the viper written language is gonna be called) written in calligraphy all around. There was a note inside. She reached in and was greeted by Janus Vipers coiling around her arm. Quickly, she grabbed the note from the center of the knot of vipers.

"What is it?" Shafir asks from the other side of the room. She unfolds the note. In plain (whatever the scorpion language is called), it read I have him. The vase fell to the ground, shattering on impact with the ground. The vipers stayed interlaced with each other. Panic washed over her, paralyzing her where she stood.

"Adira, what does it say?" He says as he quickly rushes over to her.

"She has him. Eris took Ammon. She's going to kill him." She tells him weakly. His eyes widen.

"You don't know that-"

"Who else would have sent a vase full of Vipers with that kind of note?" She yells. He takes another step towards her.

"You don't know that it's Ammon she has. He could be walking around the compound, think this through Adira." He says, trying to talk her down.

"No. He's the only one she could be talking about. I have to go save him." She says as her voice starts to crack ever so slightly.

"You're not going anywhere near Eris." He growls subtly.

"He doesn't belong in this mess. Please, I need to go!" She prayed that he couldn't notice the tears building up in her eyes. He, of course, could.

"Father and I agreed to keep you as far away from Eris and Mikael as possible. I'm sorry, but I cannot let you go."

"Please Shafir, I can't let him die. I couldn't live with myself." Her emotions take ahold of her and tears start streaming down her face. The fear of losing Ammon suffocated her, made her feel helpless. He was the only person she had ever cared for in this way, and she was about to lose him. All because her father and her brother wanted to shelter her.

This was a foreign sight to see for Shafir. In all his years of being with Adira, he has never seen her break down completely, or in any way for that matter. This mercenary must mean something to her that he never anticipated.

"Oh my god, you're in love with him." He says in shock. She quickly to him with mixed emotions.

"How did you-"

"It doesn't matter how I figured it out. What matters is how we are going to get him from Eris." He gave her a hopeful look, despite being heartbroken. One of his worst fears came true.

"You would help me get him back? What about your agreement with father?" She asks with wide eyes.

"I can suffer the consequences when we get there. Come on, let's go." He tells her. She smiles and pulls him into a tight hug. He lightly returned the gesture before backing away.

"Alright, let's go." She says. The two Scorpions fled the scene, their minds set on the Viper hideout.
