Chapter 35

The group ran down the hall quickly. The moaning of the zombies was sudden in the once quiet air.

It was already a shock to see them, but having to leave the kids? That was something they'd never do, but they didn't have a choice.

"How are we going to get up there?!" Liam asked, trying to make-do without a gun. He'd thrown the only one he had up to the pre-teens, knowing that they probably need it. "The stairs are blocked!"

"We'll find a way," Toby said. "There has to be a way."

"Follow me!" Zoey yelled, running down a hallway. It seemed empty at first, but the more noise they made as they ran down the hallway, more seemed to appear. Undead ghouls appeared behind boxes, debris, and inside rooms and closests.

"Where are we going?!" Adam asked.

"I have no idea!" Zoey yelled. "Just keep running!"

The group turned down another hallway, avoiding all obstacles. There was another hole in the roof, but no possible way to get up. They ran past it.

As Jerome was jumping over a pile of fallen ceiling, his foot caught on a metal beam, and he fell to the floor.

"Jerome!" Adam said, and ran over to help his friend up. "Get away you dorks!" He pushed his friend forward once he was on his feet, his hand on the other's back.

He took a bit too long, because the leading zombie zombie from the crowb behind him grabbed his collar. Adam gasped and started to struggle, yelling out in surprise.

"Move!" He heard someone yell. He bent over, a loud noise sounded, and the zombie grabbing him from behind him fell. He had to yank the fingers still gripping his collar to keep it from choking him, and ran towards the group.

"Thanks," He said, noticing it was Alex who shot. The ginger nodded, and the group ran down the hallway.

"We have to hide!" Ross said. He looked around before laying his eyes on some stairs. But they weren't going up; they were heading down. "Let's go down there!"

"I thought we were going up!" Liam said. "Elly and Caleb are alone up there!"

"It's only temporary," Ross said. "Once they leave, we'll come back up."

Liam didn't have time to argue; the dead were getting dangerously close.

The group headed for the doors that lead to the basement. Ross opened the doors, and had everyone get inside before slamming the doors shut.

The basement was not what they expected. It was empty, and very quiet, but not what they expected.

The basement was part of a morgue. There were bodies, but it looked as if none were alive. They were carefully placed on beds, and seemed to have been killed through the head.

"Well," Adam huffed. "That didn't quite go as planned."

"No," Jerome said. "But atleast we named them 'dorks'."

Elly and Caleb stared at where their friends once stood. They watched silently as the mob of the undead walked right below them, not passing a glance at them.

"Are they," Caleb began. "Gone?"

"No," Elly said. "They can't be. They said they'll meet us up here."

"I hope so," Caleb said, the thought of losing Liam, heck, losing anyone in thier group send his stomach in cartwheels.

"They'll be alright," Elly said. She turned away from the hole and inspected the room they were in.

The room was trashed. There were hospital beds on their side, slammed against the wall, and just thrown across the floor. There were bodies, too, but they were dead. Really dead. The floor looked unstable and the paint was chipping off the walls. The smell of decay and other body waste filled the room, and Elly and Caleb held their noses while heading towards the door.

"How will we find them?" Caleb asked. "This hospital is huge!"

"I know," Elly said. "We just have to stay alert. There could be some zombies around here, and we need to try to meet up with them." She turned and started down a hallway, her newly-aquired pistol in her grip. Caleb followed suit.

The hallways were just as littered. Papers, torn clothing, bodies and other materials were strewn everywhere; the smell was even worse. Most of the bodies had holes in the flesh where zombies had bitten them. The only thing keeping them from coming back was the distinct shot in the head.

The two pre-teens cautiously walked down the hallway, keeping an eye out for any danger. There wasn't anything currently dangerous.

"I think we should try to hide somewhere," Caleb said. "Atleast for now. It's not safe just out in the open."

"We're not technically out in the open. We're in a hospital," Elly said.

"I-- You know what I mean," Caleb said. "We have to be careful. We didn't even see the zombies down there! We can't just wander the hospital alone!"

"I know," Elly said, frowning. "It's not safe. But I'm just concerned on how the others are going to find us. There were a lot of zombies down there, Caleb."

"Yeah," Caleb said, looking down at the floor. "I hope they'll be alright."

"Where should we stay?" Elly asked. "For a while, anyway. Until we hear something."

"How about there?" Caleb suggested, pointing to what looked like an office.

"Sure," Elly said, and the two walked over to the door.

The door had a window, so the two looked through before opening the door. The office was in less a mess than the outside, but there was a body sitting at a chair. It had a bullet through it's head, and a gun was still held in his grip.

"What do we do about him?" Caleb whispered, afraid the man will suddenly come to life.

"Just push him outside," Elly said. She walked over to the side of the man, and looked at Caleb expectantly. He walked to the other side of the man, and took the gun out of his grip. He set it down on the table before looking over at Elly.

"Be careful," Elly said. "He could've been infected. We don't want to catch the virus." Of course, Caleb didn't know that Elly was perfectly safe from the virus. She has been bitten many times over the year and half she was away from the Yogs. She only keeps it a secret now, because she fears they might not speak to her or kill her(It's happened before).

Caleb cautiously grabbed the man's arm, as did Elly. They dragged him out trying to make little sound, and dumped him in the hall. Then they shut the office door and locked it.

The rest of the office had papers and a blood stain splattered on the wall(where could that be from, I wonder...). Otherwise, the office was pretty clean.

"I think we're safe for now," Elly said.

"What do we do, now?" Caleb asked.

Elly sat down on the table and set her pistol down next to her.

"We wait."
