Caleb and Elly stayed where they were as they watched the undead walk passed the door. Niether moved for fear that the dead would see them, but both wanted to get away as soon as possible. Just the sight of the zombies sent chills down their spines. They held hands tightly as the hairs on the back of their neck stood up.
It seemed to take forever for the zombies to pass, each moment making them worry one will see them. But none ever did. They all passed by, heading towards the loud noise from downstairs. Finally, the last zombie passed, but neither moved even after the hallways became quiet. Woody miraculously hadn't stirred.
"Do you think they're gone?" Elly asked.
"No," Caleb said. "They're right downstairs. Or down the hall. We have to be quiet."
"I got that," Elly said. "But what should we do? If they start to migrate back to wherever they were before, we can't just sit here."
"I know," Caleb said, getting up from the desk. "But where should we go?"
Elly also got up from the chair and looked around. If they went out the door, they would be caught by the undead out there. There was one more window high up on the back wall, but even if they did get it open, it was too small to fit any of them.
"I don't see any way to get out," Elly said. "It's a really closed-off office."
"There isn't really an other way?" Caleb asked. Elly shook her head. "Well, maybe we can sneak out. The others are somewhere downstairs, and they're alright. Maybe the zombies that passed are distracted by them."
Elly looked at him skeptically. "Yeah, and end up being a five-star zombie buffet."
"No, I'm serious," Caleb said. "What if we leave quickly? That door didn't creak when we came in, so we might be able to leave soundlessly, too."
Elly thought for a moment. "...I don't know. That sounds really dangerous."
"Everything we've done is dangerous," Caleb said, earning a startled look from Elly. "We have to go through with this. It's just going through a door and finding cover." He bit his lip as he thought. "Think of it as a video game. You like those, right? Think of it as a video game, where you go from cover to cover avoiding zombies."
Elly smiled at even chuckled at the video game reference. "Okay. I hope your idea works."
The two walked up to the door and looked out the window. They saw the undead crowding at the end of the hall, where the staircase is, and passed the room with the hole in the floor.
"If we had looked around we would've saw that staircase," Elly muttered.
"I think that's the same staircase from downstairs," Caleb said. "Blocked."
The undead didn't move when Caleb slowly opened the door. He stepped out, eyes on the zombies. He kept the door opened for Elly, who followed him. Their hearts pounded in their chests, realizing that one wrong move could send a horde of undead after them.
"This way," Caleb whispered, and slowly walked down the hallway. He kept repeatedly looking over his shoulder, as did Elly, making sure the undead hadn't heard them.
They made it to another hallway, and after peering down it, judged it as safe. They pressed themselves against the wall and took deep breaths.
"That was close," Elly said.
"It's not over yet," Caleb said, and took her arm. He lead her down the hallway, opening doors and looking in. He must've found a room he liked, because he pulled her in and closed the door.
