The monitor was beeping slowly, it was the only thing you heard that was from reality, the only thing because nobody was here yet, but you knew he would come.
In your head, you heard his laughter, his crying, his flustered and defensive tone. You heard yourself before you met him, crying and worthless, sad.
But with those two very different things, you had realized one thing.
That blue-eyed swimmer gave you something to live for, he gave you that one soul purpose in your life.
You had come to the decision that your one soul purpose was meeting him. Memories flooded your mind like a rainstorm, you wanted to cry out because your head was in such immense pain, but gasped as you let it take control of your consciousness.
You were playing with the water, you remember this day very well. You were crying, in such a vulnerable state at the moment, but nobody came up to the pool anyways, swim season was over, the water was too cold now. Your fingers delicately traced on the surface of the water, causing small ripples in the clear substance.
That's when somebody sat down next to you, disturbing your peaceful atmosphere, you jumped at his sudden appearance. But...you knew him, from social studies, he didn't talk much but he was friends with Makoto.
"You like water?" He asked, if it had been another person asking you than you would have laughed at the question, but you knew he was serious.
"It's....calm. It makes me see a reflection of myself I never look at, one that can't be seen in a mirror." You sniffled, trying to dry up your tears while he took in your response.
"It makes you feel free too, doesn't it?" He asked as he traced the water just as you had, but so much more delicately, his movements were so light and graceful, he barely caused any ripples. You laughed at his question by now, but nodded, and soon realized that your eyes were no longer watery and your face was no longer wet.
You were brought out of your memories to look around the room, the window to the hallway had blinds that were open now, your separated parents were here while talking to the doctor. The doctor shook his head and your mother cried, you knew what it meant.
He wasn't here though.
"My name's Haruka, by the way." He spat out while walking you home, even though it was dark now since he had taken the time to listen to your struggles.
"I'm Y/n." You giggled in response, you grew quite fond of him even though you had hardly talked to him. But you had told him more than most of your friends knew, you felt so calm around him...why?
"W-Would you care to eat lunch with me and my friends tomorrow?" Haruka asked, and you nodded.
"I'd love to." You replied while smiling, and he waited while you were about to go to your front door, but instead hugged him tightly before leaving, hurrying inside.
You heard running in the hallway, he was here, you knew it. You knew those light footsteps anywhere, you saw him appear in the window and talk to your parents, before jogging inside.
"Y/n." He said breathlessly as he looked down upon you, your bandaged and broken state. You were beyond repair and you both knew it, your doctor said you might not even last the next few hours....it was getting harder to breathe with the thought of saying goodbye.
"Haru...." You sighed contently as he sat in the chair beside your hospital bed. "I'm so sorry." You choked out, your emotions taking control of you.
"N-No, Y/n this isn't your fault...that...that bastard was drunk!" He cursed to himself, "I should have been with you, god! Why didn't I go?" He hit his head repeatedly, as you reached out your hand to stop him.
"Haruka...don't say that. You have such a bright future ahead of you, I was content with my life." You smiled as he frowned, crying now as he tried to hide his face.
"D-Don't say that Y/n!" He yelled in frustration as he held your hand tightly in the grasp of both of his. "I love you so much, I want to grow old together, to start a family, get married!" He spilled out all of his plans and it broke your heart.
"Haru." You called him out of his emotional breakdown as you stared at him seriously, you didn't want to show any pain here, you wanted him to be strong. "You know how this is ending and you have to accept it, I know it's hard." You tried comforting him but he refused any sort of it, he wasn't going to accept it and you knew it.
"Why did that man have to hit you? Why was he drinking and driving?" Haru yelled as he continued to sob.
"Haru, all I wanted in life was to be alive while I'm here on this earth." You confessed, "You have given me the reason I'm alive, you gave me love and you made me free, that is all I've ever wanted." You croaked out your words, now getting emotional as he sobbed into the crook of your neck. He inhaled your scent, lavender with a hint of mackerel thanks to him, the smell was unique, you were unique.
The beeping on your machine slowed down, your parents came into the room and someone else, you couldn't see past your blurry vision anymore.
"Haruka Nanase." You called him out by his full name, he was still in shock and held onto your hand like it was the only thing he'd ever be able to hold in his life. "I love you, may we meet again." You weakly said as the doctors came inside the room, you could see the whiteness of their coats.....or was it something else?
Soon, you lost your hearing and all you saw was memories.
"Do you love me?" Haru asked as you giggled, wrapping your arms around his waist as the two of you strolled down the street.
"I don't think I'm capable of loving anybody else." You admitted, and he sensed the honesty in your voice, he kissed your temple as the two of you continued walking.
"Haru! You won!" You cheered, now in a different past time, when he won at free style swimming. He had hugged his friends that were on the swim team, but ran to you afterwards.
"I didn't need to win, I have you as the prize already. God, how did I get so lucky to have you?" He asked as you blushed.
"O-Oh stop Haru." You smiled as he leaned down, getting all your attention as he stole breath away from the kiss he gave you.
"We're soul mates, even in past lives we loved each other I know it." You told him one day, you were in another memory, while holding hands with him, he grunted in agreement.
"Because, you're my water Haru, you're my life source." You admitted as he turned to look at you, his wide eyes quivering.
"And you are my water, we both supply each other with what we need, we are soul mates." He continued on as you grinned, looking back up at him as he kissed you once more. Is this what it felt like to live, to love?
Meanwhile, your machine had a flat beeping noise as the doctors wrote down the time of death. Haruka's face was drained and your mother wept, your father left long ago.
"She's gone Makoto." Haru whimpered to his friend who came in the room just in time to witness your passing. "She's......gone....." Haru trailed off the sentence as your hands were still warm.
"She loved you, I am so sorry Haru." Makoto's voice was shaking, he was too emotional himself and he knew it, but he knew his friend was hurting so much.
Haru brought the hand, which was now cooling, up to his face. It was now seven minutes after your death, your brain activity had ceased, he wanted you to live in your memories forever though, in memories of the two of you.
"May we meet again." He whispered painfully as he kissed your lifeless hand, before gently placing it down, letting his best friend lead him out of the room, and out of the hospital.
While walking back to Haru's house, because Makoto did not trust Haruka alone at this state, all Haru could stare at was the water.
The moonlight reflected to perfectly in it's shimmering waves of the ocean, it gave him a spark of hope. The weather was like it was the day he met you, and he swore he saw your peaceful face in the moonlight's reflection.
"Wait for me, may we meet again."
