Camila's POV
*one week later*
I don't know why I'm doing this but I am. Maybe it's another one of my attempts to run away from my thoughts or maybe it's because I really am scared that I don't know how to run a farm. Maybe both.
I was on my way down to the farm I was assigned to. Mr. Connely told me that the person living there was one of his former students who just graduated two years ago. Her name is Lauren Jauregui and to be honest, I have no idea how to say that. My professor said it once but too fast for me to latch onto it fully. I do hope she's nice to me because if not, this is going to be a rough summer.
I'm beginning to feel scared, what if she doesn't like me? What if I mess up too much and don't get it right? I've read all about how to maintain a farm in my textbooks but I've never been taught how to actually DO them.
Ashlee was right, this might just hurt me in the end. I wish she was here with me right now because she's always good at calming my nerves when I get scared.
I try and shift my focus away from the negative and stare outside the car window, seeing all the crop fields go by one after the other, after the other. It was almost nonstop until the taxi driver took a turn past a small town. I focused on the people coming in and out of the grocery store and small shops, they looked friendly and what I expected people living in farm country to look like.
Before I knew it I was staring at more crop fields again. I love looking at them actually, the way they hold such a calm, peaceful presence. This is where my heart belonged and as silly as some people thought that was, that desire never changed.
After about ten more minutes, the taxi driver turned left into a long driveway. Upon reaching the end of the bumpy, graveled path I saw the cutest site. A small house that looked like it could be pulled right out of my dreams. It was painted white with some green on the roof and elsewhere.
I noticed the small house had a porch that wrapped around the front and side. I could already feel that this house was welcoming me inside which calmed me down.
The taxi driver stopped the car in front of the house he wrapped his head around to look at me with a warm smile, "here you are ma'am, are you going to need much help getting everything out of the back?"
"No I should be fine, I didn't bring much," I explained to him. I stepped out of the cab peeking my head up and over the car door, breathing in the air as if I wanted to savor every ounce.
I shut the door and pull out my suitcase and a couple of boxes from the trunk and side of the car. After everything was taken out, I paid the driver and made sure everything was to the side for him to leave. After turning the car around, a dust cloud followed him as he made his way back down the long path.
I turned back around, taking in the view of the house again. A small smile formed on my lips at the thought of this house being mine and owning property like this someday. However, that was not the case. I snapped out of my daydream as I began to pick up a couple stacked boxes, a little heavier than thought.
Small step after step I felt my arms giving out a bit but still wasn't close enough to the porch to set them down quite yet. Damn if I'm going to be owning a farm someday, I really have to gain some muscle, I thought as a noise quickly caught my attention.
"Oh hey hey I'll help you with those slow down," I heard an eager voice exclaim paired with the sound of shuffling feet rushing towards me.
I couldn't see who it was over the boxes but soon a heavy weight was lifted off my arms as the person set down the boxes beside us before standing back up to look into my eyes which made me immediately stop whatever was running through my mind before that and just stare. I suddenly felt more nervous than I was before for some reason.
"Hi I'm Lauren, Lauren Jauregui," she said smiling and putting out her hand for me to shake it. So that's how you say it, I gotta remember that. I quickly shook her hand, internally kicking myself for probably looking like a fool as my first impression. She looked awkwardly at our hands as it seemed I had been shaking her hand for longer than normal. I quickly noticed this and snatched my hand, putting it back down to my side stiffly.
"Your name's Camila right?" she said breaking the silence I hadn't noticed. I quickly realized I hadn't spoken yet and nodded my head.
"Yes, yeah hi sorry, I am Camila Cabello, this is such a beautiful house you have," I said turning my attention away from myself.
"Yeah it was my grandparents and so was the land but they're too old to work on it anymore," she said turning around to look at the house then back at me.
"Well why don't I help you bring your stuff inside and show you where your room is," she said grabbing the stack of boxes again, picking them up easier than I had.
"Ok yeah sounds great, thanks for helping me," I said grabbing my suitcase and following her closely behind and up onto the porch.
"No problem Camila," she said turning around and walking backwards, smiling then facing forward again to climb up the stairs.
I'm surprised at how young she is considering she owns a farm all to herself. But I can already tell she's not mean, quite nice actually. She has a great smile too. Maybe this summer won't be as bad as I thought.
