College is hard enough for someone normal. Now imagine being hated because of who you are. You look a little different, you act different, you like different things, so you are a freak. It sucks a lot. mean, I don't have it as bad as those mutants, but still, life pretty much sucks for me. Until I met Ana. She was this exchange student from Canada, and she liked all the same stuff as me and she was really nice, but people hated her, more than me because she was lesbian. I didn't mind. It just meant we got to hang out more, since people avoided us both, and my parents were idiots.
She was crazy clever, great memory, like instant recall, but it was more than that. She remembered everything, and anything, and she always told you a very acute answer when you asked her something. It kind of rubbed off on me, because even though I was a klutzy idiot, pretty soon we were top of all our classes. Tests and homework aren’t that hard when you always remember the answers, algorithms and such. We got bumped up to the gifted classes and started doing competitions, like the ones where you recite as many digits in ‘pie’ as possible. We tied for first. Every time.
Things were awesome. People still hated us but we ad each other and we had a bunch of prize money and our grades were top notch. We didn’t need to review or study so we had started looking at extra classes since we were breezing through our regular ones, and pretty soon we were always in lessons. Day school, night school, online classes, extra stuff over breaks. We were in our second year of college and we already had all of our basic stuff and more.
I was the only kid n school who would share a dorm with a lesbian so Ana and I slept at the school every night. Still had a room back home, but I hated my parents so I never visited. So one day I get up and I’m bored so I sprayed whipped cream all over Ana’s hand and poked her nose with a feather. She slapped herself with her hand and jumped up shouting. I was rolling on the floor and she was cursing like a sailor. She glared at me.
“Not funny Ginny, I hate whipped cream.” I was still laughing. “It’s like 5 a.m. you know that? Gosh. We don’t have classes for another 3 hours!.
“Yeah, but we both know you are behind on that Art history project so why don’t you work on that while I finish up my sculpture I said from the floor. She rolled her eyes and sat on her bed opening up her laptop and bean typing, her eyes flicking across the screen fingers moving like a speeding bullet. I rolled across the room to the table we used for Art and uncovered my sculpture. It was wood, and I was supposed to be making a rampant unicorn. I set about shaping the mane, being careful to carve each divot of hair. Pretty soon Ana stopped tapping and skipped over to me.
I was just about finished when she said, “Didn’t you forget something?” I scowled at her as she smirked at me. I never forgot something and she knew it. “That kid Pietro asked you to breakfast today. You going? He was cute. White blonde hair, German back ground, on track team. Sure he talks pretty fast, but I’m sure you can keep up.” It didn’t matter what I heard, or how fast, if I could hear it than I remembered it. We both did. I turned back to my project.
“No I’m not going because I don’t have time for boys. We have two History papers due today, and an English oral presentation. Need to go to the gym and take my ‘Rules of the Game’ test for last semester, and then we have to go across town to the C. I. of A. for our final exam. Then we take the online test for our master’s in astronomy. Don’t have time to sit and talk for hours to Pietro Anderson. And besides, he isn’t that cute.” She rolled her eyes.
“If you take the online exam now, and finish the Unicorn tonight after C. I. A., then you could go with him. He is really sweet, and he likes you. C’mon Ginny. It would be like Ginny and Malfoy! SO CUTE!” she whined and squealed. I sighed and set down my knife.
