MatPat took sip of his drink, and placed it firmly back on he table. He looked back up at Lilli.
"Yeah, I'm fine. Just... you were raised by those god awful people," he started, running his fingers through his fringe, misplacing it over to the wrong side of his head. Lilli froze. She hadn't mentioned her parents, to him now or ever on the internet. She stared at MatPat, who's face was filled with a degree of seriousness.
"Mat, how did you know?" Lilli asked, slightly scared.
"I don't know why Steph and I ever trusted them to look after you," he continued. Tears started to well in his eyes, his hand frozen to the side of his head. "Lilli, what was your last name again?"
"You're kidding, right?" she stuttered, scared something wasn't right with Mat. She stood up, and looked him in the eye.
"Look, I don't know what stunt you're pulling, but I'm definitely terrified," she started as she turned to leave. Mat grabbed ahold of her wrist and spun her around.
"Don't leave yet, please. Just let me explain," he pleaded. She nodded slightly, and he took a half step back. He took a deep breath, and she tried processing what was happening. MatPat knew about her broken home, somehow. But how?
"Lilli Patrick, I remember when you were a toddler. You were beautiful, and you always had a happy glint in your eyes, and never stopped smiling. When Steph and I were young, we didn't know what to do. When we found out she was pregnant, we weren't even in our senior year. She was so scared, but we went through with it. We had you. But, as we were still in school, and studying, you can only imagine how stressful it was for us to have you and still be in school. It's not that we didn't love you, and care for you. We loved you, and cared about you, far more than anything else, then and now. We just weren't ready to be parents. So, Steph's parents had old friends in Ohio who said they'd look after you. But, three months later, they took you to Australia, and we were completely out of touch with you. I'm sorry it took you until you turned sixteen to find us, Lilli. But just know, now that you're classified as an Adult over here, you can stay with us. Please Lilli. Please don't leave again, not after we've just found you again,"
Lilli stood before him, gobsmacked. In an attempt to process what Mat had just told her, she walked out onto the street, the sun beating on her face.
"B-but how? You're just a YouTuber I've watched for years, and idolised, not my..." She didn't say that word. She'd never had one, so how was she supposed to say it now, after some strange story?
"Lilli, I know it's unbelievable, but here; proof," he said as he rummaged through his wallet. He pulled out one single photograph of a baby girl, who smiled happily at the camera. She'd seen the photo before.
"Wait a sec," she started, as she looked in her phone case. Behind her credit card was the only picture she had of her as a baby. An exact copy of the image Mat was holding in his hand.
"It's really you," Mat smiled, embracing her tightly. She let her tears escape her eyes, rolling down her cheeks.
"Dad," she whispered.
