A True Theorist ~ A MatPat Fanfiction

Lilli looked in her suitcase for some appropriate clothing for a consultation with MatPat. She found old t-shirts with sarcastic quotes, a pair of jeans, a few odd socks and a jumper. Great, she thought. Darren and Beck were both in the apartment looking through her other suitcase.

"You've got some jewellery here," pointed out Darren.

"No need, I'm not even bothering putting on make-up." Lilli replied. She looked through her pile of t-shirts, remembering she packed a fancier one for a dinner three days prior. She threw a few of them on the other side of the room, making the pile slightly smaller.

"Here's that top you wore at the restaurant," started Becky, holding up a loose, black, long sleeved shirt. Lilli smiled at the sight of it.

"Yep, that's it!" she replied, jumping up from the floor and walking over to Becky. She took the top, her pair of light blue jeans, and a pair of ankle boots to get changed as Becky and Darren went back to the car.

Lilli stepped out on the street, her friends moving seats in the SUV. Jessica moved from the back seat to the front next to Becky, giving Lilli one last hug.

"You're so lucky! Have fun, and please tell me how he is in person!" Jessica said, as she moved out of the embrace.

"Oh, don't worry, I will. And great job today. You should totally get in," Lilli replied as Jessica closed the door of the SUV. They drove away, and Lilli set off to the Starbucks, the windows gleaming in the late morning sun. She strolled down the street, looking at her phone. She was right on time, for once. 

She stopped at the front of the Starbuck, gazing in awe at the menu. The drinks look better than they did in Dan and Phil's Christmas vlog. She looked at the many flavour choices, from a caramel macchiato to a vanilla frappe. She'd made up her mind, and went inside to the counter.

She stood in line, this specific Starbucks being the busiest store on the street. When it was her turn to put in her order, they asked her name. 

"Lilli, thanks," she smiled. The woman at the counter smiled, and Lilli stepped over to the side.

"Lilli, it's you," came a familiar voice.

"Mat!" she exclaimed as he pulled her in for an embrace, nearly spilling his drink.

"Well, what's this theory you've got," Lilli started, as they sat down at a table near the window. He sat adjacent to her, fumbling in a backpack. He lay a file on the table, then his own laptop. He opened the file, and swerved it over to face Lilli. She moved it closer to her, and adjusted her glasses. It was a theory about Undertale, and a good one at that, she thought. 

"Fascinating," she mumbled to herself, smiling slightly at the thought that she was the first person MatPat would show a theory. She continued, until she'd finished the starting paragraph. 

"This is brilliant! Why would you possibly think that Sans is-"

"It's all just a theory," he interrupted. Lilli's smile grew wider, and Mat mirrored her actions. He then went back to his laptop, searching for something. 

"That's not just it, though. If Sans was really Ness, then theoretically, they would have similar appearances, even thought Sans is a skeleton and Ness is still human. That's only just the obvious, it goes deeper as well," he started trailing off like he does in his videos. His eyes glinted as he spoke, like he does in his live shows whilst discussing theories. She loved that, and could listen to his theories all day. Whilst he was talking, Lilli's name was called from the counter for her to collect her drink. 

She sat down, looking once more at the notes Mat had written. 

"So, what do you think?" he asked eagerly. Lili looked back at him, astonished. He was actually asking her for an opinion on a theory. She smiled back.

"Well, it's brilliant! Well thought out, used canon events, as usual. I like it, but I much prefer the theories based on cold hard science. It's easier to draw conclusions to," She replied, closing the folder labelled 'Sans is Ness' on their shared table. There was a moment of silence as Mat closed his laptop and placed everything back in his bag.

"Look, thanks for coming out today, especially on such short notice. When are you going back to Australia?" he asked. 

"Tomorrow evening, at about 7:30," Lilli replied, checking the time on her phone. It was just past nine thirty.

"Lilli, theres something I need to tell you," he started, hesitantly. Lilli put her phone back in her pocket, and looked back up at him. He looked happier than she'd ever seen him before, in his videos or in real life. 

"Um, okay. What is it?" she asked, adjusting herself in her seat. Something about their conversation was making her nervous, but she couldn't put her finger on it. She listened contently. 

"Well, this may sound totally farfetched, but-"

Her phone started ringing. Mat slumped slightly backwards into his seat, and Lilli awkwardly answered.

"Lilli! How's it going?" asked Jessica.

"Perfectly fine, look, you got me at a bad time," Lilli half whispered back.

"Okay, but one thing, Beck wants to know when she's picking you up," 

"I don't know, I'll just get a cab," 

"But we already decided-"

"Jess, just give me a sec. You got me at a bad time," Lilli concluded. 

"Alright, I'll tell Beck. Have fun," Jessica replied in a monotone. She hang up. Lilli put her phone back in her pocket, and looked back at Mat.

"So sorry for that, just a friend," Lilli started.

"No, it's fine. I just..." he stopped, as if he was having trouble finding the right words. He ran his fingers through his hair, a sign he was nervous. He did it all the time in his live streams, especially when he was in an intense game of Mario Party.

"Mat, is everything alright?"
