Lilli stood at the foot of the bed closest to the window in the hotel room. Darren, Jessica and Becky were all jamming clothes into carry ons and suitcases. Lilli had to tell them about what MatPat said earlier that day, and fast. She took a deep breath, and walked over to where her friends were stacking the suitcases.
"Look, theres something you guys need to know," She started, getting the photo in her phone case. She showed it to them, and they all looked back at her, puzzled.
"What's that?" asked Darren, taking the photo.
"That's me. When I was with my real parents, sixteen years ago," she replied, taking the photo back.
"That's it? Where'd you get the picture, then?" questioned Becky.
"I've always had the picture. But, it's not where I got it. It's who else has this picture," Lilli sighed as she gazed at the photo of her. Her younger self's smile, happy knowing she's loved, radiated onto her older self.
"Mat had this picture, guys. He told me about me, when I was young. He told me about how he and Steph used to look at me, and how happy I was. They're my real parents," she smiled, tears making pathways down her cheeks.
"No flumping way!" exclaimed Jessica, embracing her friend. Becky stepped back a tad, and held her head in her hands.
"Why the hell would he tell you that?" she asked as Jessica pulled away.
"Would he lie?" Darren asked, moving towards Lilli.
"Well, he cried genuinely when he was telling me, in the middle of Starbucks," Lilli started.
"What about your foster parents?" asked Becky.
"I don't know. They wouldn't care if I stayed here with Mat and Steph,"
"Then there's school, and like, all your belongings," began Jessica.
"Jess, that can be taken care of. Kids move schools all the time. I hardly even had anything, I'm just missing school uniforms and a few formal dresses and shorter shorts. But I never wear the shorts, and if I move schools, the uniforms won't matter. I've got everything else here. Those guys never got me anything, anyway,"
"Well, that's not wrong. I remember your birthday parties," replied Jessica. Lilli's birthday's were always terrible. She hardly even got a cupcake with a candle in it. She always snuck off to Jessica's house, and they made cupcakes together, played ukulele together and had Lilli's birthdays together. That would change if she moved in with MatPat.
"But they still need to know," started Darren. Lilli sighed as she got out her phone. She placed the photo back inside its case and tried calling her carers. It went straight to voicemail.
"Hey, please call back when you get this. I'm staying over in America with my friends for a while we're sorting some stuff out. I've found my parents, the real ones. Thanks for everything, though. Love you," Lilli recorded the message her foster parents wouldn't find for a few hours.
Her friends looked at her in disbelief, and Lilli looked back, slightly lost.
She had to tell MatPat she'd stay with him for her last few years of school. But what about everyone back home? What about Jess? No, she thought. She wasn't meant for that. She'd found her real parents. The people who were meant to raise her. She remembered how much she wanted real parents when she was a kid. She remembers wanting people who would be there for her. She made up her mind.
"You forget theres bound to be a court case over custody and all that, Lilli," started Becky, resting a hand on Lilli's.
"This has only just begun."
