Lilli settled in for bed on the couch in the lounge room, putting down her phone. MatPat stood in the kitchen, making three cups of hot chocolate. The smell of the melting marshmallows and warm cocoa wafted into the living area, filling the house with a wintery vibe, even though winter had ended months ago. He walked out to the couch, and handed Lilli a cup. She held the cup tightly with both hands, like in aesthetic Tumblr pictures, and took a sip.
"You okay? Steph told me about earlier, and if there's anything else you need, please do tell us," MatPat asked. Lilli sighed, and smiled, a bad habit she picked up from being ignored by Joyce and David.
"Mat, I - Dad, I'm fine. Really. Everything will be sorted, sooner or later. Joyce is okay with me staying the rest of the year and transferring to a school nearby. Plus, I passed my English exam last year with pretty good marks, A minus. I pass in all my other subjects too. We'll find a school soon, right?"
"Of course, there's one that's 10 minutes away. We'll enrol you there at the start of our school year, which is September. You'll have to re-do the first half of year 11, but but they'll be able to slot you in, I'm sure. And then, it'll all run smoothly until graduation. It'll take a while to get used to, but if you're that smart, then I'm sure you'll figure it out,"
MatPat concluded his statement and kissed Lilli on the forehead. He stood up, and took his and Steph's mugs upstairs. As his footsteps trailed off into nothingness, Lilli settled in. She pulled the blanket up and over her shoulders, taking out her phone again. There was a single unread message.
Darren: Hey, we're on the flight. Hope everything's all good with Mat, I know it'll all be fine. Becky and I are coming back the second we can find a flight, so don't worry about us too much! And Jess is fine, I know you'll ask. See you when we get back, x
She smiled at her screen, and replied.
Lilli: I miss you guys already! I've sorted out the whole school situation, and did you say you went to Crawford High? Cause I'm pretty sure that's the school I'll be enrolling at! Can't wait to talk when you're back home, x
He replied nearly instantly.
Darren: Yeah, that'll be awesome! I'll be able to show you around and stuff you see in those crappy movies like High School Musical.
Lilli: How dare you say that about HSM! It's a sacred movie, but you can have the sequels.
Lilli laughed at this, even though she knew the words to literally every song in all the movies.
Darren: Well, I'll have to talk soon, I forgot to bring my charger *face-palms* I'll talk as soon as I can! x
Lilli smiled at the last message, trying to hold onto his presence as long as she could. In this unfamiliar world, it seemed as if there wasn't much to remind her of her past.
Suddenly, there was a band from upstairs. Lilli stood up, the blanket draped on the corner of the couch unevenly. She ran upstairs, around the strange twists and turns. Inside the GTLive room, MatPat held Skip, looking down at a broken glass with what seemed to be Diet Coke spilled in a puddle.
"Skip, geez, this is why you aren't allowed up here anymore!" MatPat exclaimed as he pet the cat between his ears. He kneeled down and released Skip, and as he lift his head, he noticed Lilli standing at the door.
"Oh, hey. Everything okay?"
"Um, yeah, I just heard the glass break and..." Lilli remembered how many glasses broke outside her bedroom door. The cracks always led to yelling. The yelling led to screams. Nothing ever went well.
"Yeah, it's all fine. I'll get some carpet cleaner and just vacuum it. Can you get the dustpan from down there?" He gestured over to the storage cubes as he grabbed a can of carpet cleaner from beneath Jason's desk. She walked over to the cubes and pulled the first one out, and as if on cue, right on top was the dustpan and brush. She lift it up, careful about the glass surrounding her on the floor. As she looked to close the drawer, she noticed a note, ripped in half. As she looked at it, she noticed her father's shadow growing larger. She shoved the note in her pocket and stood up. She handed the pan and brush over to him as he started talking again.
"I always knew cats and coke glasses would never work together," he muttered after a minute, collecting the large pieces of glass off the carpet. He stood up after he collected them all and walked downstairs, presumably to place the remains of the glass in the bin. Lilli remained in the room, and went to work on the stain. She grabbed the carpet cleaner from Jason's desk and sprayed it onto the dark stain. It started to foam slightly, and she went searching for the vacuum.
There was a small wardrobe in the master bedroom, where MatPat's scripts were recorded. As Lilli opened the door to the wardrobe, she found his recording table. It was a small desk at the far end of the wardrobe, with a small swivel chair, a microphone and a chalkboard that read "MatPat's Recording Studio" in her mum's handwriting. She walked over to it, running a hand over the desk. It wasn't a polished desk, and had small bits of wood poking up everywhere. The microphone was the only item on the desk without dust covering it, suggesting he had recorded a theory recently.
Under the desk was the vacuum, the hose bent and squashed in awkward places. Lilli pulled it out, being careful not to bang anything on the top of the desk. She dragged it into the GTLive room and started vacuuming over the stain. When the carpet cleaner was all gone, and the stain was nearly unnoticeable, she left the vacuum in the corner of the room and walked downstairs.
MatPat was standing at the kitchen counter, the dustpan still in his hand. He had his phone in his other hand, and spoke to someone on the other side.
"Yeah, no, that's great. Tomorrow at ten? Yeah, that's perfect. I also have someone for you to meet. Yeah, I think you'll like them. And thanks again, I really wanted this intro to be a bang for the new series. Yeah, seeya tomorrow. Bye," he put his phone on the counter and walked over to the stairs, where Lilli was stood.
"It's all clean?" he asked, kissing her forehead. She smiled.
"Yeah, and the stain's barely noticeable," Lilli responded. He placed a loose string of hair behind her hair and walked upstairs.
"See you in the morning, sweetie," he yawned, walking out of sight. Lilli managed to whisper a goodnight before she made her way back to the couch. She was exhausted, but excited, and nervous all at the same time. She wasn't used to feeling anything like this much before. She knew there was a word for it somewhere. As she drifted off to sleep, the word echoed around her brain, filling her dreams.
Happiness.
