The faint beeping sound was all Mia heard as she came to her senses, the monitors that recorded her heartbeat echoed in her ears. Going to move she was held during down by so strong pair of arms, as she opened her eyes she caught the tears in her husbands eyes.

"Ste-Steve?" Her voice was hoarse which had probably been caused by the intubation tube she had to have before she was rushed to surgery then again it could have also been the lack of talking she had done over the past few days.

"It's okay, I'm here sweetheart. Let me call Will" Emilia didn't say anything just nodded as her husband left the room.

"Look who's awake. I just went to grab some coffee" Kelly smiled at his best friend, he was really glad she was okay. "You had me scared there for a minute kiddo" Kelly leant down and gave his best friend a soft hug kissing her forehead gently. It was true, he had been petrified of losing the closest thing he had to a sister granted he had his half-sister Katie but that had been different she wasn't always around yet Emilia had always been by his side even in his darkest of days.

"We heard our favorite patient was awake so we just had to come and see"  Clarke joked also leaning down to give his friend a hug before turning 'doctor'.

"You're a popular girl Em" Will laughed, it was true Emilia had been unconscious for four days, she had suffered from major internal bleeding which had been repaired with surgery. The firefighters of 51 and the police officers at the 21st District, well those who had got to know Emilia over the years had all been to visit her and she was rarely left alone. Kelly and Steve. She had even received a visit from Sargent Platt herself, according to her the firehouse's favorite Lieutenant also had a huge impact on the officers at the precinct many of which had made sure to make a detour to Emilia's room if they had been at Chicago Med.

"Will?"

"Yes it's me, how are you feeling?" Will asked as he began looking through Mia's chart.

"Sore" Emilia winced as she tried to sit up only to be stopped by Kelly who was sat on the edge of the hospital bed.

"Squeeze my hand as hard as you can" Will took her hand and let her press as hard as she could, satisfied he decided that there would be no need for an immediate scan and gently set her up "Let's get you up. Easy easy"

"Thank you will" Mia smiled slightly but as if suddenly realizing something she became increasingly panicked "What happened? Is Danny okay?"

The four men exchanged a look with each other which only added to Emilia's confusion she looked expectedly to Kelly who just bowed his head not wanting to have to break the news to her. He remembered having to tell her about Shay and how much that broke her, she was still struggling with her father's unanswered death as well as Andy another of her closest friends who had died only two years ago at a house fire. Severide didn't think he could be the one to let her brake.

Steve had been the one to answer as he stepped closer to his still fairly disorientated wife, picking up her hand he gently traced kisses on her palm before whispering "Don't you remember?"

"Remember what?" She asked pulling her hand away from Steve's touch.

"Mia, Danny didn't-he- the building collapsed, he wasn't far enough away" Steve said gently looking at his wife, she looked like a child, he hated to think how she was after her father's death.

"He's dead?" It broke the men to hear the crack in Emilia's voice, Will and Clarke gave the lieutenant a hug before they both left to give the three some space. Will had known Emilia at the time of her father's death having attended high school at the same time, he couldn't help but remember the fragile girl that just appeared one day.
