A Quick Matter of Heartache, Heartbreak, and a Handful of Hope

Status: It's complicated.
Setting: Grassy hill, late at night.

It was dark- really dark. The kind of dark where secrets come out and you feel set aside from yourself, like the consequences of the words you speak and the actions you grasp at will never ever catch up to you. This is the most dangerous kind of dark- it promises regret, the coldness of a few tears, and a jumble of unwanted feelings. This is the time of lost interest and renewed emotions and neediness all around.

It was late- really too fucking late for this. This was the time of the night when you said things you meant, the ones that hit the closest to home. This was the time where you knew you would ignore each other in the morning. A one night stand of the mouth.

The first person said, in a state of heartache, oblivious to the metaphorical cardboard box on his head (a buffer? Save yourself from what shouldn't be said), the world, and the words that should've been left as thoughts. He said, in a manner that could've only been known as hopefulness in a situation that had no cause for hope, quite possibly the most heavily-weighted question in the world. He said, "Do you love me?" He waited for an answer. He waited for a while.

The other boy sat there. He had heard the question- there was absolutely no doubt about that. He was hesitating and he knew it. Love is not a matter that waits for hesitation, though. An answer much be provided.

"No."
"W-what?"
"No. I don't love you."

Silence blanketed the two boys, thick as fog and heavy as the truth.

"But."
"But?"
"But I think I can love you. I think I can, and I think I will. I know that I can see myself loving you, feel myself slowly backing down a pit of pure devotion. I have the ability to love you and I promise I will, when the time comes."

The first boy blinked at that, and turned to look back up at the blinking stars above him.
He shouldn't have said anything.
