Laralen sat quietly in the carriage, watching the hills go down and up as they passed by. They were on their way to Mirkwood. The battle for middle earth felt long ago but she could still feel the fear of it inside her. The darkness that almost swallowed the whole world whole.
It had been a good idea after all to make Legolas go with the halfling. Who knew their world would be saved by the peaceful tiny people? By old bilbo's nephew. She could still remember sketching Bilbo, how happy it made him. They were long gone now, traveled to Valinor.
She turned to look at the ellon seated across her. He had just turned 89, his nose buried in a book.
"Dorainen," Laralen spoke to him. He glanced up, eyes identical to hers. "Once we arrive in Mirkwood there will be no hiding behind books. Alright?"
Dorainen made a face but nodded once before burying his nose back in the book. Laralen sighed. He was getting older and yet he preferred books over people. How introverted. She smiled then, taking in his appearance. His dark hair framing his face perfectly, braided like his fathers. The jeweled chain like crown wrapped around his head, signifying his status and a bright sapphire jewel at the center, a symbol of his heart. Calm, peaceful and collected as the blue sky but deep and relentless like the sea.
The carriage came to a stop at the familiar bridge like structure. Dorainen had visited before when he was still little, it was a little after the new King of Gondor was crowned. He had met the princess, who was far older than him and far more...ruthless in a way. Somehow, he was not keen to make her acquaintance again. The door opened and he hopped out, shoving the small pocket book inside his coat and offered a hand to Laralen. They were greeted by the Queen at the entrance, she still looked the same, Dorainen thought. Still burned with the same beauty. She smiled at them as they entered the halls.
"Where is Princess Annuniel?" Laralen asked, as Dorainen walked behind them, taking in the halls of the palace. He had not been able to do so on his last visit because the princess had relentlessly chased him around, brandishing a sword and asking him to fight her. He had never been more afraid of women, except for Ari. He was always afraid of her.
"Around here somewhere, no doubt causing trouble," The queen replied with an easy smile. How they could allow a princess to run around like ruthless barbarian was beyond him. At last they made it to where the festivities was held. Dorainen caught the eyes of his father who was standing next to King Thranduil. Legolas, the prince, stood beside his father looking like the prince he was born to be and the King he chose not to become. The prince looked happier now, even if this was practically good bye for him. His father walked towards them immediately.
He gave Laralen a kiss on the head before turning to him. He was almost as tall as him now.
"How was the trip?" He asked and Dorainen shrugged.
"It was alright," he answered. Laralen shook her head but smiled all the same as Dorainen walked over to where they were serving sweets. He loved them and would sometimes eat them in secret, of course nothing could be kept a secret from his mother.
"I swear he got his personality from your side of the family," she said, looking up at the man beside her. Elrohir raised a brow, "Are you sure? because I was convinced he got it from yours."
"Do not even speak about who got who's personality," Mantheniel commented as her eyes followed a figure striding towards a group of innocent elleths. Her hair was braided loosely, a color of blonde silver. Her eyes focused with the same fire that burned inside her. Mantheniel then noticed her daughter was not wearing any shoes. She sighed until another figure emerged, following the princess with easy strides. His blonde hair a dark contrast to hers. Before Annuniel could scare the group of elleths, Legolas had taken a hold of her shoulders and pulled her back. They argued until Legolas gestured to where Mantheniel was standing, with Elrohir and Laralen.
