The Dining Room, Miss Tibbet's Home for Boys

"That is bad."
"The porridge is burnt, Miss Tibbet!"
"Shut your mouth, Bill. Mike! For heaven's sake, don't play with the jam. Franz, grab me the rag. Can't you boys behave like Alistar?"
Alistar blushed bright red and ate his breakfast quietly.
The clock struck eight and boys rushed for the schoolroom.

"I wonder how she looks like," cried Gerry.
"I hope she doesn't look like Miss Tibbet," stated Mike. "Fat, and rude and..."
"That's very impolite of you!" exclaimed Alistar.
"But I'm just telling the..."
"Keep quiet, please."
A young woman was standing in front of them.
"And I believe Miss Tibbet isn't fat nor rude, Mr. Shears."
"You... you... know my name?"
"I learnt your names over night, Mike. And I think I have a strong sense of memory."
"You are..."
"Your substitute, Miss Wonders."
She held out her hand and Gerry shook it.
"I am Gerry Gregson."
"I know," she smiled and turned to Alistar.
"Do you know mine, Miss Wonders?" asked the boy.
"Yes. Alistar Peterson, and I am very sorry of your misfortunes."
"What misfortunes?" asked Gerry.
"I was sent here by my mother, I have to say, some months or so after I was born. She... handed me to Miss Tibbet. All she left me is this."
Alistar took out a necklace which hung around his neck.
"Oh, Al. I'm so sorry..."
Alistar tucked the necklace back into his shirt.
"It's alright, I'm okay now. I have shelter, I have you guys. I just don't have..."
At this, a tear rolled down his cheek.
"I thought all the boys were dumped by their mothers!" cried Mike.
Miss Wonders shook her head and knelt down. She wiped away Alistar's tears as she spoke,
"But Alistar's different. His parents did not want to separate with him, they were forced to hand their son to the orphanage. If his parents... aren't in a difficult situation, they wouldn't have let him go, and... separate him from... from..."
"From what?"
"A world that he should belong."
"How do you know so much?"
"I just know... and I know."
