Summer....
Mad-eye Moody stomped down the hall. It was the end of a meeting of The Order Of The Phoenix and he was getting ready to leave.
"Lauren," he said, pausing as she walked down the stairs. One of the downsides to being twelve, Lauren thought, was that she was too old to stay in the room during the Orders' meetings. She hadn't been allowed since she was five, but she had hid under the table countless times, until she was eight and too big.
"Yes?" she asked. It was mid-August and Lauren couldn't wait for school to start. As usual though, she didn't want to leave Sirius.
"I thought you might be interested to know that I will be your Defense Against The Dark Arts teacher this year," Mad-eye said. Lauren's face brightened.
"Really?"she said. "First Remus and now you! Maybe I could get Sirius to teach next year." Mad-eye laughed.
"And I'll tell you what," he offered. "If you shout "Constant Vigilance" in class, I'll pop this out," he continued, pointing at his magical eye. "and I'll throw it at you." Lauren laughed.
"This year's going to be great," she said, smiling at him.
Hogwarts...
The entire school stared at the gnarly man in the corner and watched as he took a swig from a flask in his pocket. It was Mad-eye Moody.
"What's he drinking, you suppose?"Seamus Finnigan asked.
"I don't know, but I don't think it's pumpkin juice." Harry said.
"Hey, Lauren," Ron asked. "You know him pretty well; what's he drinking?" Lauren narrowed her eyes at the man who was supposedly Mad-eye Moody.
"I don't know," she said suspiciously. "Mad-eye doesn't drink. He says it clouds your mind and prevents you from having constant vigilance."
"So, what are you saying?" Marian asked.
"I'm saying that is not Mad-eye Moody." The others shook their heads.
"It's Dumbledore," Harry said "He wouldn't let an impostor in Hogwarts,". Hermione and Ginny exchanged a look, both of them probably thinking about Lockhart.
"Well maybe he doesn't know he's an impostor," Lauren supplied.
Weeks later...
Lauren sat in her Defense Against the Dark Arts class, eyeing Moody. She had been watching him closely and today she decided to test him. She raised her hand, her jaw set.
"Yes, Ms. Black?"Moody asked. Lauren took a deep breath and stood up.
"CONSTANT VIGILANCE!"she shouted. Her classmates laughed. But Moody didn't react.
"Sit down,"he said firmly. She did so and class resumed. Lauren wrung her hands. She knew now, that he was an impostor. But what to do about it, she had no idea. So she decided to write Sirius.
2 days later..
Lauren tore open the letter. She had told Sirius everything about the impostor Mad-eye Moody, and now she could read his response. The letter said,
Lauren,
It sounds like he really is an impostor. If you are positive, then my advice is to go to Dumbledore. He will listen. But I don't think you should mention this to anyone else. The impostor could be a Dark wizard and I don't want anything bad happening to you. If he starts to suspect that you know, tell me immediately. Good Luck.
-Sirius
Lauren swallowed. She looked toward the entrance to the common room as Harry came in. She walked over to him.
"Harry,"she began, "you are close with Dumbledore, right?" Harry nodded.
"Yes" he replied.
"You wouldn't happen to know the password to his office, would you?" she asked casually. Harry looked at her curiously.
"Why do you need the password?" he questioned.
"I have an urgent matter to discuss with him," she said smoothly. "It involves the Phoenix," Harry nodded.
"Lemon Drop," Lauren smiled at him.
"Thanks Harry,"she said, and she walked out of the common room.
"Lemon Drop," Lauren said. She was standing at the entrance to Dumbledore's office. She knocked on the door before entering. Dumbledore glanced up as she walked in.
"Lauren," he said, sounding surprised. "To what do I owe this pleasure?" Lauren swallowed hard and approached him.
"Sir," she began, "I need to talk to you about Mad-eye, I mean Professor Moody." Dumbledore nodded.
"Go on,"
"I know it will sound strange, but that's not Mad-eye Moody."she said firmly "I know Mad-eye and that's not him. He doesn't drink and this impostor does. And over the summer," Lauren launched into an explanation as to why her professor was an impostor. Dumbledore listened carefully as she spoke. When she finished, he nodded. But before he could respond, McGonagall and Snape walked into the room.
"I'm sorry Albus, I didn't realize you had a visitor." McGonagall insisted.
"Quite alright, Minerva." Dumbledore said."We were just finishing up here. Lauren, I understand your concern, but I don't think you have any thing to worry about. Now, why don't you head back to your common room." Lauren stared at him, her bright eyes dark. He didn't believe me, she thought.
"Fine,"she said coldly. She walked out of the room, her eyes now bright with anger. I have to prove it to him somehow, Lauren thought, or this could end very badly. But how can I prove it when I don't even know who the impostor is? Lauren stopped in her tracks as it clicked in her head. That's it, she thought. I have to figure out who he is.
