"Harry, that's Katie." Hermione whispered. It was lunch in the Great Hall and Lauren was sitting next to Harry as Hermione whispered about the return of Katie Bell, the girl who'd been cursed months earlier. Harry looked up fro his book and turned towards the other side of the room. While he was distracted, Lauren leaned over and read the handwriting on the book. It read,
"Sectumsempra- for enemies."
Suddenly, Harry grabbed the book and stood up, leaving to go see Katie. Lauren frowned and her stomach twisted. Instincts. Something bad was coming. She watched Harry closely as he turned and saw Malfoy standing in the doorway, his face contorted in terror. Her eyes widened as Malfoy fled from the room-and Harry followed him. Lauren stood up, ignoring the questions from her friends, and chased after the boys. She stood quietly outside the bathroom door, listening.
"You hexed her- didn't you." Harry demanded. Malfoy let out a cry and threw a spell at Harry. He recovered quickly and fired back. Lauren inhaled deeply. They were dueling. She bolted away from her post and towards the Great Hall. Everyone watched as she ran into the room and sprinted to the teachers table. McGonagall and Snape stood up to meet her.
"Lauren? What is it?" McGonagall asked.
"Harry- Draco- bathroom- fighting- bad" Lauren said between gasps.
"What?" McGonagall asked frantically.
"HarryandDracoareduelingintheboy'sbathroom." Lauren sputtered. "Help." As soon as the words came out of her mouth, Snape whisked off to the bathroom. McGonagall and Lauren followed, the other students staring, wondering what was going on. Hermione, Ron, Ginny, and Colin sat nervously in their seats.
"I'm going after them." Colin declared, standing up. Ron and Marian grabbed him and pulled him back into his seat.
"No you're not." they said in unison.
Meanwhile.....
Harry stood in horror, watching as blood appeared all over Malfoy. Sectumsempra was an evil spell and he regretted using it. Snape rushed in and stared back and forth between Harry and Draco. Then he knelt down and started using healing spells on Malfoy. Harry bolted out of the room, ignoring a stunned McGonagall who stood in the doorway. He didn't even see Lauren standing in the room. But she followed him. He ducked into an abandoned hallway and sank to the floor, panting. Lauren entered and sat next to him as he cradled his head in his hands.
"What was the spell?" she asked, but it sounded more like an order to Harry. He glanced at her and jumped in surprise. Her fists were clenched and her eyes were bright enough to burn the world down. She was mad, madder than he'd ever seen her. But there was something else. The longer Harry looked at her, the more emotions he saw. She was desperate for his answer out of anger-but also out of sadness. There was grief and pain in her eyes, buried under fury.
"Sectumsempra" he said softly. The burning intensity of Lauren's eyes dulled. Her fists unclenched and she calmed. Lauren sighed and pressed her head against the wall. She stared at Harry.
"Give it to me." she said calmly. Harry looked her.
"Give you what?"
"The book."
"What book?" he questioned, even though he knew exactly which one she meant.
"The Half-Blood Prince's book." she said coldly. Reluctantly, he handed it over. Lauren took it and stood up. She held out a hand to him. "You can't stay here forever." she told him. Harry glanced at her.
"Why not?"
"Because you can't live in the past while the world moves forward."she explained. Harry looked at her, the emotions she had revealed earlier were gone. This was the Lauren he knew, the confident, spunky girl he saw as a sister. He took her hand and stood up.
