Lauren quickly looked around, to make sure no one was following her, and ducked into the Room of Requirement. Dumbledore's Army had been meeting here for weeks and it was going great. Today they were going to be practicing their skills, almost like a test in a duel form. Lauren stood between Colin and Marian as Harry told them who they would be dueling.

"Lauren," Harry said, examining a list in his hands. "You will be dueling...Colin." Lauren smiled and Colin went pale.

"Please don't kill me." he said nervously. She shoved him playfully.

"I would never!" she protested. Colin nodded, but he didn't look sure. Lauren watched as Nigel and Harry dueled, both of them recoiling backwards into the walls. Then it was Hermione and Ron's turn. She bit back a laugh at Ron's confident face. But after he was launched into the wall with a small yelp, she buried her face in Colin's shoulder to smother her laughter. Now it was her turn. She glanced across the room to see Colin's terrified face looking back at her.

"Don't look so scared, Colin,"Harry said. "You can take her." Colin stared at him.

"Have you met her?"he said anxiously. "She could kill you!" "

Nah, she couldn't," Harry insisted. "Lauren wouldn't-" But Harry's words were cut off as Lauren waved her wand. He was picked up from the ground, thrown against the wall, and Lauren proceeded to toss him around the room like a rag doll. Then she released him and he fell to the floor with a moan. She casually walked over, put her foot on his stomach to keep him pinned to the floor, and pointed her wand at his throat.

"Still think I couldn't kill you, Potter?" she questioned. Harry gulped and shook his head. "That's what I thought."she said, releasing him and putting a hand out to help him up. "I don't like to be underestimated." she stated coldly. The rest of the D.A. nodded.

Later...

The members of the D.A. were practicing the levitation charm. As Lauren watched, Colin was levitated into the air by Cho Chang. Harry came over and adjusted Cho's wand. She turned to look at him, losing her concentration, and Colin flew to the floor. Lauren and Marian burst out laughing as he picked himself up off the ground. He pulled out his wand and pointed it at the girls.

"I will hex you." he warned. Lauren only laughed harder.

Another Meeting....

"Today we will be working on the Patronus Charm," Harry explained. Excitement swirled around the members of the D.A. and within a few meetings, all of them had at least a wisp of light, if not a full-fledged patronus. All, that is, except for Lauren. She tried and tried but nothing was working. She felt about as talented as Neville. Lauren sighed as another attempt failed.

"Maybe you need a stronger memory,"Harry suggested.

"I've tried them all,"Lauren insisted. "None of my happy memories work." Harry frowned.

"Sometimes, a happy memory doesn't work," he offered.

"Then what does?"

"Well, it's hard to explain,"he began. "Try using a memory that isn't - happy exactly, but one that fills you up with an inexpiable emotion." Lauren thought to herself. She searched through her mind for the feeling Harry had described. Suddenly, it hit her and she smiled. "Got one?"Harry asked. She nodded. "Well, give it a go,"he said. Lauren took a deep breath and readied her wand.

"Expecto Patronum!"she cried out. And a full sized Hippogriff shot out of her wand. She gasped. The other members looked in awe as the hippogriff flew around the room.

"I didn't know patronuses could be magical creatures." Marian said.

"They can be, but it's extremely rare."Hermione supplied. They were all shocked at the animal, but no one was as surprised as Lauren. She felt her knees go weak, and she sank to the ground as the other members went back to work. Harry sat down next to her as she grabbed her legs and made herself small, fighting off tears.

"What did you think of?"Harry asked gently.

"My mother."Lauren whispered. "I asked about her once and I was remembering what I was told and Sirius and Remus's faces when they told me about her." she swallowed hard, her eyes glassy. "I normally don't like to think about her, but I remember Sirius telling me that her favorite animal was a hippogriff."

Harry looked at her. He understood. He understood completely. He'd felt the same way when he'd found out that his stag patronus was just like his dad's. But Harry also knew that this was deeper for Lauren. She remembered her mother and she saw her death, remembered it clear as day. She wasn't an orphan like Harry. She had a father out there somewhere, but he didn't want her; or at least, that was what Harry thought. It was hard for Lauren, to know that her father was out there. But she didn't want him as a father. She wanted him dead. But of course, no one could know why. No one even knew who her father was - except for Sirius, Remus, Dumbledore, Snape, and Lauren. Lauren's mother and some others had known, but they had taken the secret to their graves. So people like Harry and his friends could only wonder who her father really was.
