"Head of the Jury, have you come to an agreed upon decision?" The judge asked.
"We have."
"Under the account of robbery do you find the defendant guilty or not guilty?"
"Guilty."
"Under the account of first degree murder do you find the defendant guilty or not guilty?"
"Guilty."
"And under the account of obstruction to justice do you find the defendant guilty or not guilty?"
"Guilty."
"Olivia Granges you have been found guilty of three accounts, again. Since your last attempt at an escape, we have decided to move you to a level 1 maximum security prison. Since you have requested to stay close to home, we have had no choice but to transfer you to Fox River."
"That's an all male Prison, you can't..."
"Silence in court please." The judge demanded.
This was my last appeal. My last chance of someone truly seeing that I am innocent. Which I am.
"You will be given your own cell, and remain there for you full, original sentence."
I recall the judges words in my head again and again and again. "Open Block A." The guard, Bellick, shouts and a metal grated gate opens. He holds my upper arm tightly and pulls me along to where my new cell will be.
I pass many men that whistle and stare at me as I pass. Some remain silent. Including the only one that I recognise.
I've never even killed a fly let alone a person.
They think I killed my own brother. Then they think I robbed a bank and emptied his entire account so that only I could have his money. And they think I'm lying about being innocent.
I'm still scared of spiders how am I going to survive in an all male prison. I'll be eaten alive.
"Open up cell 40." Bellick shouts out. "Scofield. Lookey here, you've got yourself a cell mate." He says.
"No. There has to be some kind of mistake, I'm supposed to have my own cell." I correct the man.
"There's no more space." He finishes the conversation and pushes me inside. "I'm sure I don't have to remind you Scofield that cell mates aren't allowed to have sexual relations. I will be keeping a close eye." He looks me up and down before shouting, "Close it up."
The guard tells all the men to get back to their own business and the noise dies down but I'm still being stared at.
The only person I look at is Charles. Charles Westmoreland but eventually I break eye contact with him and turn to look at the inside of my cell. Noticing that Scofield is watching me intently. I only glance at him for a moment before looking at the rest of the place.
"What's your name?" He asks.
"Olivia Granges, yours?"
"Micheal Scofield, what did you do then?"
"Excuse me?"
"You must have done something pretty serious to end up here." He replies.
"I didn't do anything." His eyebrows raise unbelieving just like everyone else. "They think I killed my brother and robbed a bank, but I didn't I was set up. I was transferred here after trying to escape from my last prison." I say. "What about you?"
"I did rob a bank, armed." He confesses to me.
"Oh." I eye him suspiciously unsure of his intentions or what's going to happen next.
"I promise I won't touch you." He reads my mind. "I can't say the same for the rest of them though." He gestures to criminals on the other side of the bars. "It's almost yard time. Stick by me, okay?" I nod quickly.
Soon the bars slide open and inmates begin filing out of their cells. I gain many disgusting looks from the pig-like men that live here but following Michael gives me a sense of security, even though I don't know the guy.
We head over to the bleachers in the yard and Michael fiddles with the under side of the seat. His eyes don't leave me, I can feel him staring even though I'm observing everything else going on.
We sit in silence for a while until I get up. "Where are you going?" He asks me, clearly confused why I would put myself in a dangerous situation.
"Don't worry I'm fine, I'll be back in a moment." I start to walk over to one of the round tables in the yard where an older looking man is sat in his inmate clothing but has a denim jacket over the top. I stop in front of him and only glance at Michael to see if he's watching me. He is. I don't know if I can trust Charles yet. I barely know him. Barely.
"Cute cat." I say. "Can I hold her?" He looks up at me, observing my stature and looking into my long forgotten eyes. He slowly brings the cat out of his jacket and passes her up to me. "Hello Marilyn. Long time no see."
"It has been a long time." Charles replies.
"That wasn't my decision." I glance back to the bleachers. He's still watching me. I take a seat on one of the other benches at the table.
"Scofield's a good guy. You're safe with him."
"Are you telling me that, or yourself?" I ask. A guy with a sallow and hollow face has come up to Michael now, he has his pockets out turned and a couple of guys hanging around him holding the pockets.
"I'm telling you. This must be pretty scary." My head snaps back to the man in front of me.
"I never did anything wrong you know. I'm innocent."
"Don't go telling everyone, that makes you more of a target than you already are and that's saying something. These men, they haven't felt the touch of a women in years. Be careful Liv, please." He says.
"Why did you stop mum and I visiting you?" I ask. He sighs deeply.
"That was a hard thing to do. To stop seeing my two little princesses." He replies. "But spending your childhood visiting me in prison," he shakes his head. "That's not fair, that's not fair at all."
"Don't you think that was my decision to make?" Michael takes a seat at the table as well, now the other guy has left him alone. Charles ignores my last words but I don't stop staring at him. "I said, don't you think that was my decision..."
"No!" He half shouts. Not wanting all the yards attention. "It was not your decision. I've been here since before you were born."
"But I still could have visited, I wanted to see you, mum wanted to see you."
"How is Anna?" He asks after my mum. I just glare at him. "Livvy, you have to understand that I had your best interest at heart. How's Johnny?"
"Johnny's dead." His face fell further. "They think I killed him, that's why I'm here. And don't call me Livvy."
"That's ridiculous, you loved your brother, you'd never kill him." He tried to fight my useless corner, not to any success of course. I pass his cat back to him and stand up to leave. Michael follows suit. "Liv, wait." Charles says. "You're still my granddaughter. You're here now. Let me get to know you." He pleads.
"I think it's a little late for that, don't you? In the whole 20 years of my life, you only let me see you occasionally for 6 of them. I don't remember anything about those visits. Not one thing. Apart from your bloody cat."
With that I walk away from him.
