-Sam

--------------

Sam didn't need to be told anything and they didn't feel the need to inform him of anything either. It wasn't as if they were hiding it; it seemed as if everyone knew. Meg, Crowley, and all the angels seemed to have sensed it long before they did.

It started out as small things. Whenever they got the chance they were speaking on the phone about nothing in particular; Dean would explain a hunt they were on and Cas would describe the Swiss Alps. Sam knew Dean didn't give a damn about the Swiss Alps, but still Dean stayed on the line until Cas was pleased with the mental picture he painted Dean.

Sam never questioned it because it was a smart idea to look after the angel after all they had been through. For some reason, Dean always felt the need to protect Cas like how Dean protected Sam. Sam thought it was healthy that Dean was finally over obsessing about his brother's safety constantly. He wouldn't deny that Cas's descriptions of the world's wonders helped Dean feel calm and at peace.

When Dean and Cas weren't on the phone, all Sam would hear about was Cas. It started out with the odd things he said and the odd things he did. They'd joke about Cas's human interaction skills, but they'd immediately move past the topic of the angel. However, when the phone calls became more frequent, so did the topic of Cas.

Of course Sam loved Cas, but not enough to talk about him every hour of everyday. It was soft chuckles at first, of a joke Cas had butchered or the innocent confusion that Cas held about the simplest of things. Then Dean would go on and on about his eyes or his hair, even his trench coat. Sam was in no way going to deny his brother the simple pleasure of speaking about his "best friend" so he sat and listened for hours upon hours of Cas.

Then on the occasion that Cas did come and visit them, Dean and Cas were hardly ever apart. Cas would tag along with them on hunts, Cas would stay with them at the motel, and Cas would go with Dean to get lunch because Cas simply wanted to pick out the best burger. Sam had rolled his eyes at that lame excuse because Cas didn't need to eat and he wasn't surprised when they'd return from the restaurant with only two meals.

At times, they would completely forget Sam was there. They'd be discussing the right tactic for the hunt and, for reasons unknown to Sam, Dean and Cas would banter back and forth. It was never serious as both men respected the other's opinion and those small smiles on their faces gave away that they enjoyed this playfulness. Sam would grow tired of the constant flirting and take a walk because, God, did they need to do it while he was there? Yet, Sam never said a word because they were happy and finding happiness with their lifestyle was like finding gold.

So with the way Dean and Cas acted, people began to assume things. At a diner in Montana they'd given Dean and Cas a discount because they were having a "lover's special." In that moment, Dean was stunned, but Cas smiled on because he honestly didn't know what that meant. Sam, however, chuckled and thanked the kind waitress before paying the bill. After they had left the diner, Cas questioned Dean on his sudden silence and it was quite the treat for Sam to see his brother so flustered. Dean shyly explained to Cas that they had assumed he and Cas were together. Cas gave Dean a confused look before shrugging and continued walking towards the Impala.

This happened again, only they were on a case and when Dean and Cas knocked on the door, the woman assumed they were the new couple moving in just down the street. Dean quickly jumped on the opportunity and, of course, went along with it. So when the woman invited them into the house, Dean grabbed Cas's hand, carefully, leading Cas in. Cas never protested, either confused or too caught up in the case to care. But when they left the woman's house, their hands never let go of each other and Sam was only a little surprised to see them walking into the diner, laughing and holding hands.

Holding hands happened on a daily basis then, but it led to other things. Every time they saw each other, they felt the need to hug. Growing up with Dean, Sam knew he had never really enjoyed hugs, especially if they happened often. Yet, more than once a day, Dean and Cas were wrapped in each other's arms. Hugging led to cuddling, in the diner booths, on the lounge chairs in the motel, and even in bed. Cuddling in bed led to them only needing two beds again because Cas curled up with Dean in the motels' full beds.

When Sam thought about, they never even needed to have three beds because Cas didn't sleep, but that never stopped Cas from snuggling into Dean's chest at night. Sam could only assume that Cas laid there with his eyes closed, but awake, enjoying Dean's warmth. And Sam never heard Dean complain about how "creepy" it was for Cas to just lay there while Dean slept. Dean was never opposed to Cas in his bed.

Finally, when they needed to take out a huge vampire's nest in Connecticut, Cas tugged on Dean's hand before they got into the car. Sam was already sitting in the passenger seat, wondering what was taking them so long. He rolled down his window to yell at them to hurry up, but stopped when he heard Cas say, "Just be careful, Dean."

Sam watched Dean smile softly before taking the pad of his thumb and caressing Cas's cheek. And Dean responded, "Always am."

When they carefully leaned towards each other and their lips met, Sam was only surprised at how quick the kiss was. It was light and sweet, like toddlers kissing for the first time. Sam said nothing as they got in the car or after the vampire's nest when Cas came and snuck himself under Dean's arm.

Sam never said anything when he heard them exchange "I love you's" at night. Sam never said anything when they ordered their own motel room. And Sam never said anything when Cas started referring to himself as a Winchester because Sam thought this was how it was supposed to be. Dean and Cas were supposed to be this way.
