Sam sighed for what felt like the fifth time that night when he saw his brother, once again, staring at his "best friend." For as long as Sam could remember, Cas and Dean had been inseparable. Of course all friends had their fair share of fights, but Dean and Cas could never stay mad at each other for too long.So here they were, the three of them enjoying beers at a local bar and just talking. Sam felt more like a third wheel really, he didn't get half of the inside jokes Dean and Cas spoke of and they were constantly speaking of things they'd done over the past week together... without Sam.
Sam knew for a fact that both of them liked men and, more specifically, each other. But neither of them ever made a move. It was more of an annoyance than he'd like to admit. It was like watching your favorite show, seeing two characters clearly perfect for each other, but the writers never put the two together. It was heartbreaking to watch.
Sam tuned back into the conversation when Cas got up to go to the restroom. Dean watched Cas the whole way, a small smile on his lips.
"How gay are you?" Sam scoffed, lifting the cold beer to his lips.
"Excuse me?" Dean's voice came out gruff from the mass amount of alcohol he has already taken in.
"Just date him already. Your eyes say it all."
"Sam, we are not talking about this again," Dean rolled his eyes, picking at the half eaten fries on their table.
"We don't talk about this! You just brush it off. Just admit it, you have feelings for him," Sam gestured wildly, desperate for his brother to be honest.
"He is my best friend, Sammy. We are just best friends," Dean said, emphasizing every word that left his lips.
Sam rolled his eyes, but quieted as he saw Cas making his way to the table. "Sure. Friends."
Incidents like this happened all the time with their group of people. Balthazar was constantly referring to Cas as Dean's other half. Meg, Cas's surprisingly nice ex-girlfriend, joked that Cas left her for Dean. Crowley exploited their obsession with each other, if Crowley wanted a favor from either of them he knew exactly how to get what he wanted. And Gabriel who was more blunt about it, tried constantly to trick them into dates or kissing and for the most part they never worked. Endless people telling them to same thing, just date already.
At home, Cas and Dean sat on their couch watching some ridiculous ghost hunting show that they couldn't seem to change. Dean had a beer in his hand and an abandoned plate for pie on the coffee table. Cas sat right next to him, tilting his head as the ghost "spoke" to the host. Cas jumped when his phone binged with a message. He dug into his pocket and found it was from his sister.
Anna: Balthazar wants to have a family dinner. He said your lover can come as well, since you two seemed to be joined at the hip.
Cas scoffed before bumping Dean and showing him the message. "Hey, I did her!"
Cas furrowed his eyebrows. "We agreed to never speak of that."
Dean's eyes softened and he caressed Cas's cheek. "I didn't do her nearly as good as I do you."
Cas blushed a bright red before letting out a nervous laughter.
Dean and Cas were together, had been for over a year now. For some reason, they didn't want to tell the others, the constant teasing from just the idea of them going out was driving them insane. Why did they need to tell people they were going out? It was their business and well, they were happy.
They enjoyed not having to worry about their friends and family prying into their personal lives. At home they were the couple they liked to be. They could cuddle freely without eager eyes, they could kiss without hollering in the background, and they could do the deed without having to worry about people barging in.
Cas tossed his phone next to Dean's plate before laying across Dean's lap, resting his head on Dean's hand. Instinctively, Dean let his free hand explore the waves of Cas's dark hair, loving the softness.
"Do you think we should tell them?" Cas asked quietly.
Dean sighed. "Only if you want to."
Cas turned so he was laying on his back, looking up at Dean with wide blue eyes. "Maybe not tell them, but just start walking around like a real couple. Hand my hold and kiss me in front of people kind of couple."
Dean chuckled softly. "That would create chaos."
"When were we not up for raising a little hell?"
A day later, at Balthazar's dinner party, word spread fast. As soon as, Dean and Cas stepped into the house with their fingers linked together, pictures were being taken and phone calls were being made. Before they even knew what was happening everyone was barging into Balthazar's house with smug smiles on their faces.
Dean watched Cas carefully the whole time, watching him grow shy and loving every second of it. Dean opened up his leather jacket, letting Cas step inside it to hide his face. This gesture only drew sounds of "aw" from everyone in the room, Dean flipped up his middle finger when he felt Cas's heated cheeks through his shirt.
Everyone stared at the couple as they attempted to eat, but Dean was too self-conscious to enjoy his food.
"Alright," Dean snapped. "If you don't stop staring at me I won't eat and if I don't eat I'm going to start swinging."
Everyone shifted their eyes to their own plates, whispering excited words at each other. Sam and Gabriel seemed to be the most smug about it.
Cas turned to Dean and smiled shyly. "This was terrible."
Dean laughed. "Don't worry, angel. They'll get over it." Dean leaned towards Cas and pressed a gentle kiss on his cheek, very aware that people were staring again.
"What did I say about the staring!"
