also check out the song/band: Angel with a Shotgun by the Cab. Highly recommend the Symphony Solider album. The song just kinda reminds me of Cas.

Nightmares were always frequent for Dean. They always consisted of his death, his parents' deaths, and sometimes Dean couldn't save Sammy. But after years of these recurring nightmares, Dean got used to them and he was able to somewhat control himself. Tonight was different, he fell asleep with Cas wrapped up in his arms, comfortably letting Dean sleep, and Dean had never felt more content. So, of course, his mind had to ruin his peace.

He woke up gasping for air, his sweat and tears running down his face. Cas, having been awake, sat up worriedly looking at Dean. Sure, Dean tossed and turned a lot in his sleep, but he had never woken up so suddenly and in such a frenzy.

Dean sat struggling to control his breathing and imagining his nightmare over and over until Cas broke him from his trance, "Dean? Are you okay?"

Dean suddenly felt the need to hold Cas, to kiss him, to feel him because that's the only way Dean would know he was okay. Dean pulled Cas onto his lap and buried his head into Cas's hair, sobbing. "I love you, okay? I don't say it nearly enough, but I do. I love you."

Human emotions had always confused Cas, they were so complex and foreign to him, yet they were so beautiful. Here was Dean, broken and afraid, but reassuring Cas that Dean loved him. It was amazing how fear, almost opposite to love, could trigger someone to profess their love to someone else.

Cas, however confused he was about Dean's feelings, held him anyways. Dean needed his comfort, he could deny it later when he returned to his usual self, but Cas knew Dean needed his help. Cas felt weak seeing Dean like this. Dean who was usually so strong and focused on business, Dean who couldn't be bother with emotions most of the time, Dean who wouldn't even let his brother help him when times were hard, was here breaking down in the middle of the night.

Cas rocked them side to side gently, letting Dean's tears to drip into his hair and Dean's kisses to be planted on his forehead, head, or anywhere he could reach. Dean continued to mumble "I love you," into Cas's ear and it warmed Cas on the inside. The "butterflies," as Dean had explained, were wreaking havoc in Cas's stomach at the sudden affection Dean was giving him.

"What's wrong?" Cas asked quietly, when Dean had calmed down enough to breath normally again.

"Just a nightmare. Don't worry too much," Dean sighed, trying to put that wall back up, but tonight Cas wouldn't allow it.

"Dean, I have to worry. You, especially you, don't just do things like this," Cas said, untucking his head from Dean's neck to look into Dean's eyes.

Dean stared back into the ocean of Cas's eyes, knowing he couldn't resist the pleading look his lover gave him. Tonight, Dean needed to be taken care of and he wouldn't want anyone, but Cas to take care of him. "You didn't come back."

"From where?" Cas tilted his head in confusion, resembling a puppy learning its name. Dean smiled softly at the action, pressing a light kiss to Cas's forehead.

"You d-died," Dean unusually stuttered. "And you didn't come back. You always come back, but this time, no one saved you. I didn't know what to do and Sammy couldn't fix it and I-" Dean had to stop talking to take a deep breath. The lump in his throat that signaled tears was growing too large to swallow.

"I don't think I'd ever be able to leave you forever," Cas admitted, grabbing Dean's hand and playing with his calloused fingers.

"It wasn't really your choice," Dean explained, nuzzling his nose into the side of Cas's head.

Dean was never one for too much affection, he said it suffocated him, unless it was to hold Cas while he slept. Dean wasn't shy about their relationship, quite the opposite, but he was never used to affection growing up, so sometimes he forgot to show it. Cas didn't mind because he wasn't familiar with traditional human relationships. But tonight, with Dean's sudden mood and closeness, it made Cas feel more than ever before. He was feeling love and understanding it more deeply now that Dean was truly expressing himself.

"I like love," Cas said, softly, slowly bringing his nose to Dean's and rubbing them together. The gesture and comment brought a bright smile to Dean's lips because his angel was far too precious for this world.

"Me too, Bee," Dean continued to smile, pressing his forehead to Cas's. "I need to get some more sleep."

Cas nodded. "Don't worry, I'll make sure you don't have anymore nightmares."

Dean gently pressed his lips to Cas's, enjoying how well they seemed to fit together. "I know you will."
