College was nerve-racking as it was, but as soon as Cas saw the last name of his roommate, he almost lost it. It was the same last name he had written on his wrist since he was born. It was so familiar, yet he had to do a double take when he saw the paper on the bulletin board.
Winchester.
Sam was just as nervous. He was already in his room, refusing to pick a bed because what if his soulmate wanted a specific one? What if he preferred the window? What if he wanted the door? What if you're overreacting?
Then the doorknob jingled and Sam had never whipped around so fast. Before him stood an average sized man, dark hair that looked like he was rolled out of bed, and eyes as clear as the sky. He should feel something right? He was attractive after all, what was it supposed to feel like?
Cas was having the same problem. Here was a tall, muscular, hazel-eyed man standing in front of him yet Cas didn't feel much other than awkward.
"Uh, hi," Sam finally squeaked out, clearing his throat.
Cas stood frozen in the doorway, still holding the box that was getting heavier by the minute. "Hello."
"I'm Sam, but you probably already know that," Not to be ungrateful, but was meeting your soulmate this underwhelming?
"Castiel," He finally stepped into the room and put his box down, his arms screamed in relief.
"I didn't pick a bed because I didn't know if you had a preference," Sam trailed off, rubbing the back of his neck.
"Oh," Cas trailed off. This was nothing like what he read about. Of course meeting your soulmate was different for everyone, but he didn't feel it. That thing everyone collective knew about; that spark of passion or want that just clicked on.
Cas walked toward the window bed and Sam had to stop himself from screaming. He wanted the window bed, for reasons purely too personal. He had hoped that his soulmate would just feel it; they were supposed to be connected in that way. He knew it was his fault for letting Castiel pick, but it still hurt.
Their awkward behavior continued for a week. They hardly ever spoke to one another and always looked for an excuse to get out of the dorm. Was that normal?
It wasn't until a month in that Cas made an effort to get passed this and finally relish in the idea of having a soulmate.
"Want to come to the grocery store with me?" Sam had looked up from his text book confused and Cas wished he had never opened his mouth.
"Uh, sure. I guess we're running low on ramen noodles," Cas smiled at that before hurrying to put his shoes on.
The grocery store wasn't as successful as Cas would have liked, but he did get to know Sam better. Sam who liked salads and protein shakes. Sam who had enough microwave meals in his childhood to last him the rest of his life. And Sam who, usually, ran everyday.
Although Castiel appreciated all these things, realized he was the exact opposite. Cas liked hamburgers and any junk food he could get his hands on. Cas who had such a sheltered childhood he would kill for a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. And Cas who didn't understand how he stayed fit.
The only thing the two had in common was their love for learning. Sam liked unorthodox stories and lore, Cas learned to like it too. Cas liked the history of earth, Sam liked the way Castiel explained it.
Cas had concluded he liked Sam, as a friend. How was that supposed to work? They were soulmates; they had each other's last name written on their bodies.
It wasn't until holiday break that Cas found out why. Sam had invited him over to meet his family because once they found out Sam had met his soulmate, they were enthusiastic.
So they made the long drive to Kansas, filled with polite chatter and healthy banter. A very platonic bro trip.
A young couple greeted Sam and Cas upon arrival; they were sweet to Cas and he loved their home already.
"So the school really didn't think about putting you two as roommates? They have your soulmate's name on file," Mary questioned.
"No, we've never heard from the school board. This usually never happens," Sam answered, sitting not-so close to Cas on the couch.
John Winchester noticed their behavior immediately. Something felt off about them because they were nothing like he and Mary when they first found each other. So John asked Sam to help him with the turkey and left Mary and Cas to speak on.
"Hey, is everything okay between you two?" The father asked quietly.
Sam sighed heavily. "I don't know, Dad. It just doesn't feel.. right."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean," another sigh. "Sure, I like Castiel, but as a friend. We talk and laugh, but I don't feel that soulmate thing."
Then they heard an engine, a familiar rumble that Sam grew up with. Dean.
John and Sam entered the living room just as Dean opened the door and Sam saw it.
Castiel was the first thing Dean saw when he stepped into the room. Sam had never seen his brother stop dead in his tracks before. His green eyes widened and his greeting fell from his lips.
Cas was just as shell-shocked. He had never seen a man so breathtaking before.
"Dean?" Sam asked, a knowing smile on his lips. Why hadn't I thought of this before?
"Sammy!" Dean finally broke from his trance, fighting hard to look away from the blue-eyed stranger on his mother's couch.
"He's yours," Sam whispered when Dean came in for a hug.
John and Dean both heard. It clicked in John's brain. Of course, they both had the same last name on their wrists.
Dean greeted his parents before he was able to meet the literal angel in front of him.
"And this is Castiel," Dean eagerly extended his hand to Cas's and they both gasped.
That's what it felt like. Butterflies and fireworks and every cliche anyone has ever spoken of.
"Hey, Cas. Nice to meet you," and he flashed that million dollar smile that Cas was already in love with.
"Hello, Dean," that deep voice had Dean swooning. He had to go months without knowing it while his brother kept him a secret? How unfair.
They hadn't let go of each other's hands and Sam cleared his throat. They slowly retracted their hands, for everyone else in the room.
"So, Cas," Sam didn't understand why he had never thought to call him that. "You have a brother or something?"
"Yeah..." and then it finally clicked in his mind. "Oh my god, Gabriel."
