"Don't step on that fish, Castiel. Big plans for that fish.""What do you mean, father?"
"That fish will be yours."
"Mine?"
"That fish will grow into a man someday. That man will create more men and one of them will be yours to protect."
"How do I know?"
"You'll see his soul, Castiel, you'll see his pure heart. Man will always be troubled, but a good man won't be hard to find."
Millenniums later Castiel finally understood. Even after his father's disappearance, Cas never forgot those words. He never ended his search for the man that would be his.
Countless missions in heaven and Cas had never set foot onto earth, but he always looked. When his garrison was planning their next mission, Castiel gazed down at all of his father's creations. He looked at their hearts and souls, but never did one strike him.
Then a young woman held her son in her arms. She sang him a tune that he would recognize later. The baby was only a few days, but Castiel could see it. The boy would have a hard life, but he would never lose sight of what was right. The man would care for others more than himself. This man was his.
Castiel had completely forgotten about his garrison at that point. His focus was on that precious baby that he was already swearing to protect at all costs. "I waited so long for you."
His mother spoke then, words that would never be truer. "Angels are watching over you, Dean."
Castiel turned his attention back to his commander, but his mind never left the thought of his Dean.
It took a few more decades before Castiel was able to meet the man that was his. He was just as strong willed and stubborn as Castiel had foreseen, if not more. The rejection he felt during their first few meetings were hard to bare, but soon the man realized that Cas was his angel.
They had each other, through thick and thin. No matter what Dean did, Castiel was always behind him because Cas knew Dean's heart was in the right place.
Cas had seen Dean's soul and nothing had ever been more beautiful, no matter all the torment it had experienced. Cas had seen Dean's heart and nothing had ever been so more pure, no matter all the heartache it suffered.
"Don't step on that fish, Castiel. Big plans for that fish."
