"So," the magician, Leonardo Wyrik, said from his sitting position in the cage, "what were my umm..."

"Results?" Kyan offered from the high chair that was pushed againt a high white counter of the exam room. My exam room.

"Yeah, that's the word. Thanks buddy."

I caught a glimpse of Kyan's disgusted face while going through the doctors initial reports.

His results were unusal even for a magician.

"You're sure this is what you got?" I asked Kyan.

"Is it strange? It seemed pretty normal to me, but then again, I'm still not trained for checkups."

"Hmm." I flipped back to the first page where my results sat. "According to what I found, he has an average of five measures of magic in his blood on an average basis."

"Measures?"

"Units to measure magic."

"Wow," Leo said, still sitting. "That's just lazy. I mean, come on. Someone got to name the measurement for magic and they chose measure? Lazy. Lazy, I tell you. I'd like to meet the old timer who came up with that idea."

I let my glance slide over to him. "I'm listening."

"No, pretty girl, I'm talking about the one that came up with... Oh." He smiled, his head tipping to the side. With his lips cured up, I could see the slight overlapping of his top middle teeth. "So you're like super smart or something, huh?"

"She's nearly a genius," a voice said from the door. A rather mad voice. I turned to see Tori standing in the door, holding a few papers in her hands. "Paige Lilia Carroll. At the age of eighteen she was promoted to a High Commander, the youngest in history. She's contributed her genius towards silencers and weapons as well as common things like private airplanes. She specializes in magic but there are hundreds of companies that've tried to get her contribution in their inventions. Her name alone gives them more ground in the credibility area."

A knocking between the metal bars of the cage drew my eyes to it. Leo was leaning forward, looking at me with serious eyes.

With his mouth covered so that only I could see his lips, he mouthed: 'I think you have a stalker.'

A smile grew on his lips when he leaned back so his broad shoulders thumped the concrete wall behind him. He was still avoiding the use of his feet, but he was moving a bit more.

"Leo, this is Victoria Prins. Tori, Leo."

Leo gave Tori a nice smile, but Tori ignored him.

"The papers you asked for," she said, walking towards me.

"Read through these. Questions go to Kyan Vaughn, the doctor over there. Whatever he doesn't understand, ask me." I handed her the results.

I walked over to Leo's cell before sitting down in front of it, leaning my back against the cold, metal bars.

"I'll be explaining to you the current terms you'll be living under."

"Living under? That doesn't sound good for me."

"You're a magician who will most likely be living the rest of his life under the thumb of the Black Hands."

"Wow, you're right. That's awful. I'm really screwed, aren't I? When's my execution date? Is it soon? Tell me I get to see my daughter again."

"You don't have a daughter."

"How do you know that?"

I turned my head so he could see the eyebrow I raised at him.
