I flexed my hand, testing the healing muscles. Sure enough, it still hurt.

"Ms. Carroll," my driver said. "We're coming up on your destination. Where would you like me to stop?"

I peeked out the window.

We were in a small city outside of The City itself. It was older, nearly abandoned because of Hecate's call to action and her follower's reaction. Still, that didn't stop lights from dancing around the little car.

"Here's good, thank you."

The man pulled over.

I checked my bag and belt, for the third time, when I stepped out.

"Thank you," I said, though my attention was on the giddy couple skipping across the street. "In two days, pick me up from this exact spot at this exact time."

"Of course, ma'am. Will you need anything else?"

"That will be all."

I shut the door and he sped away, nearly hitting the couple. I couldn't tell if it was to teach them a lesson or because they were too erratic to stop.

I turned and looked at the small motel I'd chosen.

After laying the old lady behind the counter, I found my room,  and dropped my bag on the floor. Tonight, I slept.

---

It's been a while since I've been on patrol.

Two years, in fact.

After I devised a plan to capture Hecate, I hardly needed to lift a gun if I didn't  want to. Unfortunately, a year of fighting out in the field made me jittery when I didn't get any action. Slowly, fighting and fearing for my life became a stress reliever, and now it was an addition.

Patrolling was easy, but kept my senses alert.

Walk the streets, check for magic, make sure no one is murdered. Simple things.

I turned, picking a random direction to walk.

People watched me just as much as I walked them. A few of were clearly magicians or very strong supporters at least, crossing the street when I strolled in their direction. Apparently, it's been a while since anyone's been in this district. Any Black Hands, at least.

"Hey, ma'am!" Someone yelled.

I kept walking, figuring they were yelling at someone else. Maybe one of the girls sauntering down the sidewalk, wearing cloths that looked more like swimming wear than real clothes.

When a hand landed on my shoulder, I had to control myself. The instinct to take the hand and flip the threat was strong, but I resisted.

When I turned, a smaller girl was looking up at me. She was probably a year or two older than me, judging by her face, but my height made it hard to tell.

"Are you a Black Hand, ma'am?" She asked.

"Yes. Is there a problem?"

She held her hands up. "No problem's, just bored and trying to make conversation on a lonely night."

I raised an eyebrow. Was there something friendly about my face? I didn't think so, in fact I was sure there was nothing but cold looks and stress on my face. Between her and Leo, people were really starting to become friendly with me for some reason.

Maybe she was a magician. In that case, I had to be careful. This could be a trick.

"I'm sure there are plenty of other friendly faces you can talk to," I answered, trying o brush her off.

She kept pace we me, staying uncomfortably close to me.

"Why is a magician like you a Black Hand?"

My hands froze and my pulse roared.

I kept my voice calm when I talked to her.

"What are you talking about? If I was a magician, I  would've done the right thing and turned myself in. Maybe even killed myself."

Her lips puckered in over exaggerated sadness. "Aww, was I wrong? I'm usually not wrong about this kinda thing. It was a fifty-fifty guess with you."

"Are you a magician?"

She smiled. "Would you arrest me if I was?"

I shrugged. "Depends on the circumstances. If you resisted, I'd either immobilize you or kill you. If not, I'd cuff you and take you in."

"Ooh, kinky."

Definitely a magician or a supporter.

"Until I handed you over to HQ and let them have their way with you. For not resisting, the worst you'd get is life in prison."

"What's the best?"

"Labor camp. At least you'd keep your hands busy and your mind out of insanity."

She giggled.

Why wasn't she leaving? I should've said enough to scare her off by now.

"So why don't you just arrest me, Ms. Black Hand?"

She didn't need to say anything else for me to hear the rest of it.

Because you already know, don't you?

"Not in the mood, tonight."

"For me or arresting someone?"

Ah, so that's what she wanted.

In that case, why me? I'm sure there were plenty of magicians who'd like to 'spend time' with her. For all she knew, I could've shot her in the head and ended it there. Black Hands have been more brutal than that. Why didn't she think I was.

"Either. I'm sure you have plenty of friends who'd love to spend time with you. Have a nice night."

"You're no fun!" She yelled when I started to walk away. This time, the only thing that followed me was her yelling. "You'll regret turning me down, I promise!"

I waved her off and kept up my walk.

What was happening to me? Magicians and humans alike used to fear me. Now, girls were stopping me on the side of the street.

I turned around ready to head back to my hotel room and turn in early when a chill rushed down my spine.

"Leo."

-Author's Note-

I know, I'm sorry this chapter is so short, but it's just a little snippet of what Paige is doing while Leo's, you know... Anyways, I'm writing the next chapter right now and let me say, Paige get's her vengeance.
