"Open the cage."

Following my command, Dante Coen pulleda key ring from his pocket before tossing me a single key.

"Your magician, your key, your cage."

He looked away when he caught me glare.

I opened the cage anyway and then closed it behind me. Sliding the key out of the cage, I looked at him.

He seemed a bit more anxious when I was in the cage with him.

"You're not used to not knowing what people intend to do- Kyan, get a pen and a paper. The rest of you, out. But leave the key to his silencer."

They followed my orders closely, but I could tell the head scientist was a bit mad that I'd removed her from the domain.

"Here," Kyan said, leaning into the cage to hand me the pen and papers he'd gathered.

"No, you'll be writing. Copy down what I say. Think you can do it?"

I could hear him sigh from behind me, but there was no argument so I took it for a fine over the yes ma'am or yes Paige that I was so used to.

I took the key that Coen had dropped besides me. I moved in the awkward way of fitting my legs under me, crawling over to him, and then kneeling.

When I reached for the thick wooden silencer with green engravings on it that sat tightly around his neck, he twitched away, but I was quicker. I fit my gloved hand into the space between the wood and the neck, pulling him back to me. It was enough space for my to fit my long thin fingers.

"Um, I suggest you don't do that," Kyan said.

I stopped.

"You think he's dangerous? It's highly unlikely that he'd be able to do any damage judging from the story I heard from Dante Coen."

"No, not at all. I think he's extremely annoying when he feels comfortable. About half way through my treatment, I believe he felt more comfortable with me. He had a hard time keeping his mouth shut."

"Write down what injuries he'd sustained and what treatment you'd given him."

I fit the key into the tiny hole on the back of the silencer and clicked it open. The back split, falling into my hands.

My first instinct had me resting one of my hands on the gun that was tightly strapped around my waist. My next was to meet his eyes and search for any sign of danger.

There was a splash of blue, and by splash, I mean a real splash. The bottom of his bright green eyes exploded until it looked like the splash from jumping into a pool. And then it was gone, in a flash.

"You know, you're really pretty."

There was a few heartbeats of silence in the room.

"What?"

His head tipped to the side and he gave me a crooked smile. "The mean guy who was here earlier said you were a terrifying monster who experimented on magicians for fun. He said you had no remorse and didn't care about life. But you don't want to hurt me at all right now. It's nice. Before, they just wanted to shoot me and stuff. You know, your people are mean."

"Kyan, can you hand me Leonardo's file."

"Blegh, Leonardo. That's such a long name. Most people call me Leo, so just call me Leo."

Kyan leaned in, handing me the file. "Leonard Wyrik."

"Okay, that's rude."

I opened the file. There was a single picture of a pissed looking magician with a bleeding lip.
