*Paige*
When we landed in The City, I immediately ushered Leo in front of me. My hand tightly grasped his arm as we walked through the main building. Kyan and Tori flanked us on both sides.
"Keep your head down," I whispered to Leo. "Don't let them see."
He seemed to get the idea of how dangerous this place could be for magicians. His head stayed down and he had no sarcastic comments for me. Every time we passed a Black Hand, he inched closer to me.
"We're almost there."
"Where?"
"My office."
As I said the words, my door came into view at the end of the long hall. I pulled the keys out from my pocket and ushered the others inside, glaring down any looks I got from passing soldiers.
"This is... more mundane than I thought it would be," Kyan commented, though his eyes were stuck on the engraved doorframe on the opposite side of the room. "Wonderland?"
"Just a nickname," I answered, "not my choice. But yes. That would be it."
"And where do you want us?"
"Is this your first time in The City?"
"Yeah."
"I can introduce you to the medical staff downstairs if you'd like." I dropped my bag on the desk and dug out my laptop. "Studying magicians is half my job, the half I usually keep medical staff on hand for. Now, I have you. You'll be on call, but you're free to do what you want."
"An me?" Tori asked.
"I can put you on a call list if there are any teams in need of assistance, but you'd be on call too."
"Yes please, Paige ma'am. I'd love to watch you work, but sitting around an office all day would bore me."
"Same here," Kyan replied.
"Alright. Tori, can you take Kyan down to the medical wing? Tell them he's there on my recommendation."
"Yes ma'am."
The two of them left the room, closing the door behind them with a click.
Finally, Leo spoke up. "What about- what're you doing with me?"
"Not killing you, if that's what you're thinking."
His cheeks puffed out. "I didn't think you were going to kill me."
"Didn't you?"
"Hurt me horribly? Maybe. Take out my eye? Highly possible. Kill me? Never. You like me way too much to do that. You'd miss me."
"Stitch your mouth shut? Highly possibly."
"Nah. Feeding me would be to hard."
"Who ever said I needed to feed you?" I commented, opening the documents on my laptop. "Besides, if I really needed to, I could have Kyan put a tube in your stomach or I could just give you a straw."
He glared at me. "Seriously. What do you want with me?"
"For now, you can flip through channels on the T.V. I have other things to work on."
"Okay, but do you need help with anything, maybe? I mean, isn't it hard to work with one arm?"
He was right. Even typing with one arm was a hinderance.
"No, not right now. Nothing you're allowed to look at, at least."
"Right."
