A/N: you will all hate me after this istg

Nervous sweat seemed to drip slowly down Rey's face and neck. It sent shivers down her spine and caused the grip on her handgun to waver.

She considered shooting at the wall, claiming she 'missed' the target.

But the thing is, Rey never missed.

She tightened her grip, making her knuckles turn white. Her stomach filled with nerves and Rey choked back a sob.

He looked so pathetic sitting there in cuffs.

Prominent bags were under his deep brown eyes and his face looked sunken and pale. Bruises scattered across his neck and body and his hair remained matted to his head.

She knew she couldn't do it but she had to.

Ren seemed to plead for his death without saying anything.

Kill me. If you care, kill me.

She couldn't bring herself to pull the trigger. As soon as her finger started to push down it froze, and Rey found herself catching eyes with him. Then she scanned the people around her. It was a small crowd and Rey felt her heart break once she met eyes with Leia.

Leia was sad, of course but she nodded at Rey. Almost beckoning her forward. She didn't know why she was chosen to assassinate Ren but Leia had called her one of the most skilled agents in the agency so that counted for something. But why couldn't anyone else be chosen?

Rey was all for the idea at first, hopeful that the monster would finally be vanquished. But nobody told her how human he'd like while standing at death's door.

Looking up she caught those eyes again and they carried out the same plea. Oh, why couldn't she listen?

But she didn't.

So the trigger was never pulled and Rey watched as a gasp came from the crowd. In a frenzy Ren was soon yanked away roughly by his arms, but before he was dragged off, the two saw each other for the last time.

A look of betrayal crossed over his face.

That same look was the face that continued to haunt her re-occurring nightmares, often leaving her gasping for breath.

"Ren!"

Rey called his voice out into the dark and the only reply was complete silence.

~~~
A few months later nothing else had emerged about Kylo Ren's whereabouts. The Resistance was still holding him captive and many have said he lives through a punishment far worse than death.
Because Rey didn't kill him.
She couldn't pull the stupid trigger.
"I feel so bad for The General, especially since that's her son they're torturing. I can't believe the whole council except her a two others voted for an execution. I can't believe that Rey girl didn't kill him..."
The words made her hang her head in shame. And that same shame and guilt led her into visiting Leia herself.
"You want to see my son?"
"Yes."
"Why?"
Because I'm sorry. Because I don't want this guilt to consume me anymore. Because I just want to see his face again.
"I want to check up on him."
Leia raised her eyebrows in response, fully aware that wasn't her real reason for her request. But one look at Rey and she understood.
So she handed the key pass over and Rey took it, her hand shaking from nerves and guilt.
"Good Luck."
She would need it.
~~~

"Ren?"

Rey called his name out into the empty void. She had been in the prisons for less than 5 minutes and she already hated it.

"Ren?"

There was no answer at first and the thought that he was dead consumed her. But a few moments later Rey heard a small voice calling out to her.

"Who's there?"

It served as quite a shock to her. The voice seemed a lot more different than the Ren she knew. He sounded weak, too weak.

"It's me...Rey."

Once again there wasn't an immediate response. Instead a few coughs and moans of pain.

"Rey? Where are you?"

"I'm here."

She followed the voice, navigating through a hallway before meeting up with the cell in which he was held.

Ren looked horrible.

He was lying on the ground, cuts and bruises covering his body. His clothing was torn to shreds and the scar on his face looked to be inflamed. When she stepped closer she could spot a gash running down his back.

"Ren!"

She almost threw herself into the cell, stopping her quick movements when they were less than a feet apart.

Rey crouched down to meet his gaze. It wasn't angry but instead full of pain and betrayal.

"Why?"

"Why what?"

"Why didn't you kill me?"

"I couldn't."

"...you should've..."

His face was a sickly pale and his breaths became struggled. Soon his eyes began to close.

"Ren!"

She almost threw herself at him, grabbing him up in her arms.

"Please, stay with me. I'll find a way to get you out, maybe your mother could help you. You could run away, become a different identity...just hold on."

"Rey..."

He moved a hand up to stroke her cheek gently before letting it drop limp.

"No, no..."

She leaned forward and kissed him out of pure desperation.

"Ren please, don't do this."

"You should've killed me before...now I can't ever forgive you..."

Rey kissed him once again, desperate to keep him alive.

"Ren?"

The only response was a haunting silence.

A/N: I'm so sorry!! I honestly made myself cry with this I can't
