Jade's POV:

A blaring alarm sounded throughout the Glade. I looked up from the Glader that I was tending to and looked towards the box.

"A new Greenie is coming up, Jade," Vic smiled. I started to quicken my pace at wrapping the bandage around his arm and fumbled with the clip. Vic looked at me and chuckled.

"Go ahead, Jade. I can handle this myself," Vic laughed as he took the clip from me. I thanked him and dashed to the box, seeing a crowd of Gladers already forming. I saw Newt and Jack standing side my side and I jumped on top of the both of them. Both seemed to be taken by surprise. Both were about to jerk to the other side until I grabbed both their shoulders.

"Jeesus Jade what is bloody wrong with you?" Newt joked. I lightly hit his head and laughed. Both Jack and Newt had gotten used to the fact that I was rough and that sometimes I didn't know I had caused bruises by hitting them, in a friendly way, until I would see a blue-black on their arm or back. They also knew I liked to play around often.

"New Greenie, huh?" I asked.

"Yep. Hopefully this shank can distract you from hitting us so hard," Jack joked. I tsked him and we waited. By the time the alarm had stopped, almost every single glader was surrounding the box, except for the runners. Alby and Newt made their way to the front of the crowd and lifted the metal doors.

"How does he look like?!"

"Are we getting another girl?"

"Dibs on her!"

"We've already got 2 girls, which is that tattooed chick and you."

"Burn!"

"Shut up, Bob."

"Slim it!" Alby roared.

The whole Glade fell silent as Newt jumped into the box. Everyone, including me squeezed in closer to get a better look. Jack stood behind me. I could see a small round figure with curly hair. He was chubby and had his head down. When he finally looked up, my heart shattered a little.

He had tears running down his cheeks and he tried to scoot further back into the corner he was hiding in. He looked like he was barely 13. That just made me hate the people who sent us here even more. How could they send someone so young and innocent into this... imprisoned place? He looked like a lost, abused puppy as Newt tried to approach him.

"He looks like klunk!"

"Definitely a Slopper."

"Doesn't look any good use to the Glade except a cleaner," I heard someone say. Some gladers thought he was funny and started to obnoxiously laugh. I clenched my fist and fumed in silence. Those boys didn't know anything about the little boy in the box and they were already teasing him. I almost stormed over to the Glader when a hand touched my arm. I looked up to see Jack shaking his head slowly, telling me to ignore them. I just huffed and crossed my hands. The few Gladers in front of me looked at me and some smirked, Dan being one of them. I remembered that I was wearing a padded singlet and nothing else to cover my top body. I wanted to move to the back but was stopped. Jack pushed me to the front and I looked back.

Oh.

They would be looking at my butt.

And I chose to wear short shorts today.

I shot Jack a grateful look before straining my neck to see Newt helping the boy out of the box. The little boy's eyes darted around and landed on me. He looked at my arm and honestly, looked 10 times more frightened. I slowly approached the boy but he back further and further away.

"Come back here, Jade. Your tattoos and hair is scaring the boy," Jack sighed. I stopped walking towards him and walked backwards instead. The boy looked at me questioningly and I shot him a small smile. He, much to my surprise, smiled back.

"Whats your name, shank?" Alby gruffly asked. Newt just looked disappointed in Alby.

"Go back, Alby. You're scaring the poor shank," Newt chided. He approached the boy and squatted in front of him.

"Do you remember your name?" Newt asked gently. The chubby boy looked at him with frightened eyes and shook his head slowly. Newt was about to stand back up when the little boy spoke.

"Its Chuck."

----

For some reason, I felt that it was my duty to protect the poor boy. Chuck had already been teased multiple times and it wasn't even his first full day.

"Lets go for the tour," I heard Alby said. Chuck just nodded timidly and followed him around. Chuck was obviously still frightened with everyone around him. I sighed and jogged to Alby.

"I'll give him the tour. I know this place well enough," I said, as I started to grab Chuck's arm. Alby just nodded curtly and left to do whatever he does.

"Sorry about Alby. He has to keep the place running or else it will fall. He just has a lot of problems but will soon warm up to you," I assured. Chuck's tears had stopped flowing and looked at me with grateful eyes. I brought him to the Homestead and explained to him about everything around. I told him about all the jobs and the rules. I walked over with him to one of the maze doors and spoke in a very serious voice.

"No matter what, never walk past these doors. You will be punished not by us, but by Alby," I said, not breaking eye contact with the boy. Chuck just nodded. I smiled and was about to leave when I saw a figure running towards me. I saw the familiar jet-black hair and stopped in my tracks.

Minho collapsed the minute he entered the glade and was panting for air.

"Minho, what are you doing back so early?" I asked. Chuck just stood behind me.

"Make yourself useful and bring me a cup of water. I left my pack out there," Minho panted.

"No, what are you doing?" I asked him sternly.

"Just get me a cup of water and I'll explain to you, shuck-face. And get Alby," Minho told me, almost raising his voice. It was a miracle that no one had noticed us yet. He raised his hand and I involuntarily flinched. Minho's face softened. He probably sensed my frightened expression, but it was soon wiped off my face as I went to get Alby. Chuck followed me around like a lost puppy before wandering off by himself.

I found Alby and Newt by the gardens and told them about Minho. Both of them nodded and walked towards the East doors where Minho was still laying on the grass. I walked over to the kitchen and grabbed a bottle of water for Minho.

"Spit it, why are you back so early," Alby said, confusing and annoyance evident on his face.

Minho just rolled his eyes and sat up before speaking.

"I tried to save my behind... and I found a dead one," he said.

Newt, Alby and I looked at him in confusion before Alby asked.

"Dead what?" Curiosity lacing in his voice.

"A dead Greiver," Minho replied, before laying back down on the grass again.
