Jade's POV:
It had been a few days after the Games and people were much more happier. Everyone started smiling more and just generally, being more upbeat. I smiled at my success. These boys deserved to be happy.
"Hey Jade!" Chuck calls, running towards me. I turned and see his mop of curly brown hair bounding towards me. I smiled at the little boy.
"Hey Chuck! Did you enjoy yesterday?" I asked. The boy nodded his head vigorously. I grinned.
"Jade!" I heard someone shout.
I saw Newt limping over with Minho, approaching me. I waved goodbye to Chuck and went over to the 2 of them.
"What's up?" I asked.
"You're coming into the maze with me today to begin your first day of training," Minho said, while tossing me a Runner's backpack. I mentally knocked my head. How had I forgotten?!I nodded and followed him into the Map Room.
"How are you feeling?" Newt asked, as he fell into step beside me. I looked at him and smiled.
"Excited," I reply. He just chuckled as we entered the Map Room. I looked around the Room.
There was a big long table in the middle with a stack of paper in the middle and a cup of pencils. There were about 8 trunks on the sides with latches on them.
"Welcome to the Map Room," Minho introduced.
"Those trunks over there contain the maps that we Runners map overtime. There are 8 trunks to represent sections 1 to 8. Everyday, we come back and map out our section and compare it to the day before to see if there are any changes. But so far, no luck," he explained, gesturing to the trunks. My mood dropped slightly. Was there really no way out of the maze? These boys have been searching for 2-3 years, yet they found nothing.
"Follow me," Minho waved. Newt and I followed him towards a steel door. Minho took out a set of keys and inserted it to the lock. The door opened with a groan. We walked down a set of rickety steps and stopped at the bottom. It was pitch black. We waited for a little until we heard a small 'click'. Minho turned on the light switch and I looked around the underground room.
On the sides we're more trunks. Minho walked over to the one on the furthest to the right and opened it. I saw that it was filled wth daggers and knives. I gulped.
"What if anyone had come down here before attacking another Glader?" I shuddered. Minho scoffed.
"Only a few lucky shanks have these," he said, dangling the set of keys in front of me. I nodded and took out a dagger and examined it. It had a black rubber grip with a few specks of dirt. I dusted it off. It's blade shone under the light that had brightened the room, making it menancing. I held it and scratched it against the wooden wall. It made a nice cut. I grabbed another knife and did the same. Once I was satisfied, I walked around the room exploring it further. One trunk was filled with shoes and another was filled with Runner backpacks.
"Only a Runners get these," he said, tossing me a watch. I caught it and examined it. It was a simple black plastic watch. I clasped it around my wrist.
Minho then took out a pair of underwear.
"These bad boys are what we call the Runner undies. They keep your um... nice and comfy," Minho said, pausing slightly at the end. He looked embarrassed. He tossed it back into a trunk and took out a white plastic bag.
"These are for you," he said, tossing me a sports bra, sport shorts and shirt. I took them and barked at the boys to turn around so I could change. Newt and Minho both blushed furiously and covered they eyes. I changed into the sport clothes and jumped around. I was wearing a black shirt, black shorts and white and black trainers. Damn, I really liked black.
It represented my soul.
"I'm done," I announced. Both boys turned around and we walked out of the basement, with Newt's arm slung around my shoulders. We walked out of the Map Room and into the Glade.
"We will leave in midday. Greivers hardly come out at that time. It's safer," Minho said, getting all protective. Aw how cute.
"Jack get out of the way!" I heard a Glader shout. I whipped my head around and was horrified. I saw Jack push a young Glader out of the way of a falling plank. Jack was hit in the head and he fell to the ground, unconscious.
"Jack!" I screamed, sprinting over to the accident. Gladers were frantically trying to lift the piece of wood off Jack's body. I pushed past the small crowd and kneeled next to Jack.
"Jack!" I yelled in his face, slapping his cheek lightly. I lifted his head up so it was resting on my thigh. My tan skin was stained with crimson red blood - Jack's blood. I lifted his head and assessed the damage. I almost fainted. Tears started to pour out of my eyes.
There was a big nasty gash that went quite deep into his head, with blood gushing out of the wound. His hair was caked with blood, already starting to dry and clump. Clint was running towards us with a first-aid kit and was already grabbing Jack out of my grasps. I tried desperately to hang onto Jack's arm. 2 arms grabbed my body. I thrashed, I screamed for them to let go. I bit, I scratched until I didn't have anymore energy.
I was hauled to my feet as I watched Clint examine him. He put 2 fingers to his neck and dropped his head. He looked up and I saw tears streaming down his face. He slowly shook his head. My heart plummeted.
"No," I mumbled, before screaming.
"It can't be true! It can't be true! Jack!" I yelled until my voice was hoarse. I looked around and saw everyone sniffling. Jack was everyone's best friend. And he was gone, just like that, by saving a young Galder. Today which was meant to be the best day of my life became absolutely the worst.
I buried my face into Newts shirt, grabbing a fistful of it. I bawled and let my tears flow freely. Newt buried his face into my hair. I started to feel my hair wet. He was crying too.
I looked around for my brother. I saw Minho gazing into the Maze. He needed time to cool off. I could vaguely make out his shoulders jerking up and down. It made me cry harder. Minho was a tough person - it was rare for him to be crying. And there be was, grieving.
A few hours later, the Glade held a ceremony for Jack. They buried him and most said their goodbyes to his deceased body.
I felt numb.
I felt like a walking zombie.
I felt soulless.
I felt like dying. Jack wasn't meant to go so soon. I walked towards the showers. I had to get rid of his blood on my hands and legs. I couldn't be reminded of the horrific events. Seeing his blood made me choke up and again.
I took a towel on a rack and hung it up on a cubicle wall. I began undressing as I turned the water on. I let it run down my face and back. I saw the water stain with red as the blood washed off my body.
"You look so beautiful, Jade," a voice whisper.
My blood ran cold.
"So beautiful..."
