Chapter 25
“You're in control
Pressin' pause on my heartbeat
Someone stole all the air
So I can't speak now
I know the chase is on
I feel as though
My time has come
How many times do I fly
Through your head space
Now it's speeding away
From the safe place
Yeah, your skin
The touch, the kiss
The rush too much
And here it comes
When your lips touch mine
It's the kiss of life...”Lightning, THE WANTED
He expected a reaction. A natural expectation. You say you tried to kill yourself, and people have something to say. Or show. Like now. Never had a man look at him with that level of emotion. Too bad for Kaiden, Adam was so easy to read.
Kaiden could almost see the hug grow in Adam's arms. The resemblance of repentance for sins that weren't his to repent for.
This was Kaiden's "see what you did, dick head" moment. To let Adam feel a fraction of what he made Kaiden go through. Only the party didn't start. Once the words were out, and Adam went dead silent, they were mere sounds strung together. No meaning. And no satisfaction.
He realized that this wasn't about pulling Adam's nails off for his transgressions. Or about villainizing Kaiden's own Karma to reaffirm him as a tear-worthy victim. Not even about wrecking the running bet that Kaiden will fall for the prince before Halloween.
He wasn't the idiot he wanted to believe he was. As vague as Adam's choice of words appeared, he knew what "get to know you" entailed--and what it'd lead to. If he was brutally honest with himself, his shot of bitterness was the doings of a mind dreaming in overdrive. To a future where he'd lose his sanity and not get it back. Because if there was Adam, then there was life after Adam. And that after might very well start right now.
The hopeless romantic in him wanted to concede and tie this man to his bed. Let it go. And barricade the door that opened back to vagina. The rest of him wanted Adam to hurry up and snap out of this phase--before Kaiden got irreversibly in love.
He might like Kaiden. Legitimate like. They might develop a connection beyond friendship. Abandon themselves to the adventurous side of life. And they might even have a gazillion wonderfully exhausting, can't-walk-tomorrow all-nighters.
In the end, when the man finally snapped, and decided to lead a decent, judicious life--whatever they had together will find its fated end.
Adam will turn his full attention back to his lady--mother-material-lady. Who he married. The one who has the family blessing. His better half. With whom he'd bear fruit on his branch of the Colton family tree, if he hadn't already. And if this insistence of getting to know Kaiden meant that that lady wasn't all that, then another one would.
Kaiden couldn't and wouldn't live through that a second time.
He was done with confused men.
Any excuse would do. I don't do surfers. My cat hates blonds. I have a policy of not befriending my dad's bosses. Anything other than I don't do married men, because that was total hypocrisy. But this wasn't the part where Kaiden put on the big boy hat, and thanked Adam for his concern--then good bye. Simply because he couldn't. Damned be the wife, he liked this man. Incapacitating like. Border lining idiocy, if not full on there.
