I hung up the phone and sighed. I placed it on my desk.
Damn it, Milan.
It was hard to believe that Milan was around that.
Sweet, adorable, baby face Milan? No. Way. If I hadn't seen it, I sure as hell wouldn't have believed it. It's even hard to believe now.
It had been hours since he called. I was worried. I didn't know what to think.
My phone rang and I nearly fell out of my skin trying to get to it. I picked up and pressed it against my ear.
"Hello." I said into the mic.
"Hey." Milan's quiet voice whispered.
"Are you okay?" I asked immediately.
There was a pause.
"Milan." I said.
"I'm fine." He responded.
"What happened?"
"It was nothing. Please don't worry about it."
"Don't worry about? You don't want me to worry about it?! What the hell , Milan? You came to school with a huge bruise on your arm. And then you call me for help and I got to your house to see that lady. Did she hurt you? Where's your father?"
"It's nothing."
"It's not nothing. Please, tell me what's wrong, Milan."
"Nothing's wrong. Everything's under control. I have to go."
"Milan."
"I have to go."
"Do not hang up."
"Goodbye." He said softly before hanging up on me.
I threw my phone into the bed.
"Damn it!" I screamed out loud.
I laid down in my bed and sighed heavily.
I punched my bed repeatedly. I groaned and sat up. My blood was boiling. I hated this. Feeling useless, it was the worst feeling to have.
My phone pinged. I grabbed it.
Younger Sibling 😡: I'm staying the night at Olivia's.
I placed the phone back on my the bed. It pinged again. I picked it back up.
Kai: Hi.
I froze. I clicked on the message.
Me: Kaiser?
I waited for a response.
Kai: Who else would it be?
Me: Is something wrong?
Kai: No, why would it be?
Me: It's just that you don't usually text me.
Kai: My therapist said that it's good to start communicating. So I thought why not text you?
I smiled. It fell seconds after, this was too good to be true. But I wanted it be.
Kai: I thought about all the stuff that you said to me before. About liking me and stuff.
Me: And?
Kai: And I decided that I don't like you. And I never will because I'm taken.
What? My phone froze. Random images flashed through my screen. I looked closer and I realized that it was pictures of me. And April. And Lyle. And my parents . My friends. My family.
The images stopped. And a message appeared on the screen.
The delivery boy was a warning. Take it and run.
My breath caught. My phone shut down before turning off and back on. I went to my messages and it was gone. All of it.
My heart was going at a hundred beats per minutes. My hand was shaking slightly as I dialed Mr. Donovan's number.
It was getting hard to breathe. The phone rang and rang until the voicemail came through. I hung up and fell into the floor. I held my breath and forced myself to calm down.
Relax. Calm down, August.
I inhaled and exhaled slowly until my heart rate was normal again.
My phone started ringing. This time I was hesitant to go for it. I picked it up slowly and checked the caller I.d. It was Mr. Donovan. I answered the call and put the phone on speaker.
"Hello?" Mr. Donovan said.
"Mr. Donovan, where is Kai?" I asked frantically.
"He's eating dinner."
"Are you sure? Can you go check?"
"He's right in front of me, August. What's the matter?"
"He did something to my phone. Hacked it or something. And he was using Kai's caller I.d. So I just wanted to see if he was fine."
There was some shuffling before Mr. Donovan said something again.
"What exactly happened?"
"He was texting me from Kai's phone number and then it froze and pictures started appearing and then at the end, it said, the delivery boy was just a warning. And I'm panicking now. And I don't know what to do." I said in one breath.
"Alright, calm down. Are you still at home?"
"Yes. I'm still here. "
"Stay there. I'll have someone come for you, okay?"
"Okay." I responded while nodding.
"Okay?" He asked again, as if he was unsure if I heard him.
"Okay." I said, more certainly.
