"Since you didn't get to open your Christmas present, here it is now," Matty smiled, setting it on my lap.
Matty handed me a cup of coffee he made, sitting beside me in his bed. I took a sip of the coffee, handing the mug to him.
"Remember, it's mostly things my Nana wanted to give to you," Matty explained.
I nodded, opening the box. Laid on top was an envelope.
"I didn't read it, you're going to be the first to open it," Matty explained.
"Don't put that stress on me," I smiled. "You open it."
"No, it's for you," Matty kissed my cheek. "I'm sure of it."
I ran my fingers over the old envelope, barely touching it and managing to open it. I pulled out the folded paper and Matty laid his head on my shoulder.
I unfolded the papers, and I laughed. "You aren't allowed to read it!" I pointed to the top of the paper.
"Okay..." Matty backed away from me.
Matty. Stop reading.
Dear Matty's Partner,It is me, Annie. Right now, little Matty is only twelve years old. As I looked at his face which is oh so similar to Denise, I'm thinking about his kids... what they will become. If he's given you this letter that means that both him, and Denise, love you.
I hope that it works out between you two, because Matty is very protective. Matty is very territorial. If he's shown you this, that means he really cares about you; I would be surprised if he actually gave this to someone.
Anyway, I want to tell you everything I hope you will become with Matty, and what I expect from Matty. So, here we go.
I hope Matty tells you he loves you a lot. He doesn't tell me that very much, but I can tell he does love me... I'm pretty great. If he doesn't tell you he loves you, tell him "Annie told you to love me!"
Next is that I hope he is a gentleman to you. If Matty is not a gentleman, simply tell him he should. A boy like Matty should be kind to someone like you. I can tell you're special.
One for you.
I hope you understand that Matty doesn't open up very easily. He doesn't talk to people openly, even at this age. I want you to understand that things have happened to him, and he doesn't open up easily for a reason. Respect his boundaries.
If you two get married, I want you to leave some of my words in your vows. I want you to tell him after reciting some of my words that they are from me; but you're passing them on.
Matty is pretty much my everything when it comes to grandchildren... let him know he's special and wanted, because sometimes he doesn't believe me.
This is carrying on for a while, Denise has more letters for the future... talk to you soon.
-Matty's Nana,
Annie"What did it say?" Matty questioned.
"I'll tell you later," I smiled, putting the letter into the envelope. "She told me I can, but not now."
"You know I'll get curious," Matty chuckled.
"Well if you love her, than you won't open the letter," I smiled. "She seemed very kind."
"She was," Matty nodded.
"She cared about you a lot," I stated.
"Okay, okay. Look at the rest of the box," Matty chuckled.
Matty scooted beside me, placing his chin on my shoulder. "Did she say that she cared a lot for me?" Matty questioned.
"Every paragraph mentioned you," I smiled.
I looked in the box, not knowing what to look at first. "There's some stuff of us too, so don't flip," Matty chuckled.
"What should I look at first?" I whispered.
"That," Matty pointed to a smaller box.
I picked up the box and opened it slowly. Inside was a gift card to an arts and crafts store.
"I thought it was fitting," Matty smiled.
I turned it over and saw that it had £150 on it. "Matty!" I exclaimed.
"I know, I went a bit overboard," Matty stated, and I hugged him tightly. "There's one more thing, love."
I looked in the box once more. On a small piece of paper there was a phone number.
"That is the phone number to Jamie, call him once you have an idea for the cover of 'Medicine,' I want you to do the artwork for it."
I turned to Matty, my jaw dropped. "What? Matty!"I squealed.
Matty just smiled at me, waiting for my reaction. "Matty! No, no! No, I can't do the artwork! I don't want to be responsible for something that is going to be seen so widely!"
"Blah, blah," Matty rolled his eyes. "I know you want to, and we'll give you credit for it. You might be able to quit and be strictly an artist."
I felt my eyebrows raising, and I watched Matty's lips turn into a small smirk.
"Now that caught your ear," Matty chuckled.
"I'm surprised," I admitted. "I never thought I'd actually want to be an artist... but my degree!"
"Fuck your degree!" Matty laughed. I laughed with Matty, shaking my head.
"I'm about to graduate in May, I'll wait and finish it. But then, I'll see," I replied.
"I mostly want more time with you if I'm being honest here," Matty stated.
"How sweet of little Matty," I poked Matty's nose. "Your mum would be proud."
"Really?" Matty smiled. "I'll give her a ring then?"
"No!" I exclaimed, and Matty held his phone. I jumped on top of Matty, holding the phone away from him. "If your mum finds out I am thinking of not being a pediatrician, she'll die."
"Oh, then I won't call her," Matty lowered his phone. "Or will I?"
"Matthew!" I laughed.
"Sarilynn!" Matty responded.
I eventually got a hold on Matty's phone, rushing away from him as I held it in my grasp.
"Sarilynn!" Matty laughed.
"You'll never see it again!" I joked.
