Chapter 3

Katie Atwood

I love him so much. I can't believe he actually stayed. No one has ever cared so much about me, ever since my brother died... I can't wait till I'm out of this bed and back to school, with my friends and Thomas. Thank you god for helping me through this. I guess I needed this to see who is really here for me. Now I actually know how my parents care about me by being here. " Katie! You're awake!! Paul! She's awake!" Mom screamed as she walked in to find me fast asleep on Thomas. "Well I was sleeping. But I'm awake now! Haha!" I laughed. I saw my mom and dad step in. Wow.. I haven't seen them since the day before the night I almost died. "Honey, we missed you! We were all so worried!" she exclaimed. "Did Andrea and Adam ever come visit?" I asked as I turned to look at Thomas. "No they didn't..." He said. "but they know right?" I asked again. "Katie, everyone knows. They got you all these flowers and teddy bears. They were worried too. But Adam said he had better things to do, and Andrea wouldn't pick up..." Thomas said as he looked at me. "Call them and tell them I woke up. Now, please." I said to mom. "will do honey!" she said as she ran to grab her phone.

"Adam is coming in a little bit and Andrea.. She hasn't picked up." Thomas said as he came in.

But.. Where's Andrea? I thought. "let me call her." I said. "give me my phone please. And please exit so we can talk alone.". "sure thing babe. But if I see you crying I'm coming back in. Okay?" he asked. "okay." I smiled. He walked out and sat in the waiting area with her parents. Adam finally arrived and waited till she was done with Andrea. I picked up my phone that hasn't been touched since that morning of the accident.. " Ringgg. Ringgg. Ringgg " please pick up. Please. "Hello?" her voice came through. "Andrea! It's me! Katie! I'm awake!" I said ecstatically. " Oh.. Really..?" she asked. "yeah! I get out tomorrow. I woke up a week ago." "So now you call me? And think I'd come? What am I? Your second choice? I've been waiting for months! For you to wake up and call me first. But instead you spend it with Thomas and your parents and Adam. What, am I not important to you anymore?!" she yelled. "what are you talking about? I couldn't talk for most of the week and I couldn't get up! I didn't want you to see me like that! I was gonna wait! What's wrong with you?" I said. "Me? I didn't leave my bestfriend out of my life. No, my bestfriend was almost DEAD! I cried every single night! Not knowing if you were gonna wake up or stay brain dead. I missed you! Do you know what it's like to almost lose you?! No because you're the one that's dying! I was so scared! Look, I'm sorry I yelled at you and accused u of not calling me first. I'm just... Nevermind. Can I come to see you?" she asked sadly. "tomorrow. I think I'm gonna try to get some rest." I said quietly. "Okay. I'll see you tomorrow. We'll go shopping once they release you. If you're up to it." she said. " we'll see tomorrow. Bye.". She spoke quietly, " bye Katie.".

"Morning beautiful." Thomas said as he looked at Katie, who was finally starting to wake up. "what time is it?" I asked. "11:45" he smiled. "Is Andrea here?" I asked. "I'm right here" she said with a smile, while walking through the doorway. "ready to go shopping?" she asked happily.

I smiled and nodded. The doctors let me out at noon so they probably won't mind me getting dressed early. So I had the nurse take me off the monitor for about 5 minutes so I could get changed. Mom grabbed my favorite sweater,my black and white print leggings, my uggs,and Thomas let me use his Harrison sweatshirt. After I got dressed and was put back on the monitor, the nurse came in with my breakfast and then a little while after the doctor came in to let me go. "Katie, you are one remarkable girl. You fought through one of the toughest times and made it. You were so strong and I knew you'd wake up but I just didn't know when." he said. " Dr.james, I had Thomas get this for you. Thank you for saving me." I handed it to him with a smile and gave him a hug when he let me off the monitor. He opened it and inside the box was a ring on a chain. The ring said "Katie Atwood, 17, october 18th, 2013". " it's my name, my age, and the date you saved me." I said with a smile. " Thank you Katie. I'll treasure it forever." he replied with a smile.

I said my last good byes and thank yous to the nurses and left. Mom wouldn't let Thomas and Andrea take me out so we had a movie night at my house instead. After the movie Thomas was Afriad he'd get hit too if he went out late at night, so he stayed in Jarred's old room. Me and Andrea slept in my room.

I woke up to the smell of bacon, eggs, and gritz. My favorite! And only Thomas knew that. I got up and followed the scent to the kitchen. There Thomas was, along with Andrea and my parents.

" good morning sunshine!" they all said with smiles on their faces. I felt That I was finally home. That my parents finally care, Andrea is better than ever, and Thomas is afraid he'd lose me again. But he's going to have to go home someday. Haha. I smiled as I watched him cook. I can't wait till graduation.. I'll be out of here on the other side of the world with the boy I love. We'll be in Paris for 2 years to study, then we'll have to head back to California. I want to study for photography and Thomas, well I don't really know what he wants to do. We graduate in a month so, he's going to have to figure it out before we leave. Most people are heading towards Michigan to go to state, Adam Is leaving for Florida, and Andrea is going to The California Institute of Arts. (CIA). I'm gonna miss my parents while I'm gone, but we'll come back over break and for the summer. " You're breakfast, Katie." Thomas said As he handed me my plate and a glass of grape juice.

After I was done eating, I walked to my room to change. I put on some jeans, my uggs, and Thomas's sweatshirt. After I changed I went back downstairs and headed for the door. "where are you going?" I turned around to see Thomas and Andrea. "I'm going on a walk. By myself. I'll be careful, I promise." I said as I opened the door and walked out. I walked down the front steps and walked down the sidewalk, admiring the spring equinox. I love spring. I love the flowers that bloom, the sun, and I get to actually start playing soccer again. Graduation is only a few weeks away and I want to spend some time alone and just look around this town and say goodbye on my own. I turned the corner that led up to Adam's house. I walked up the steps and knocked on the front door. "Hey! It's finally nice to see you back on your feet!" He exclaimed. "Yupp. It's sad we only have 2 weeks left of this place." I sighed. "What are you doing around here by yourself?" " I just wanted space. You want to walk with me?" I asked. "Sure! Let me grab my coat.". I stood on the front porch for another five minutes waiting, and he came out dressed in knee length shorts, a striped blue and gold shirt, and wore his Jordan's. "Did you get your hair cut Katie? Change color?" he asked. Ha, finally, someone noticed. "Yeah, I did. I got it cut. I didn't change color tho." I told him. "Maybe it's just because it's getting warmer and your hair is turning a lighter blonde." he chuckled. This is probably the last time I get to hang out with Adam. I couldn't hold back the tears, so they just came rushing. "Woah, Shit. Did I say something?" he looked worried. "No. It's just this is the last time we'll ever get to hangout. You're going to florida and I'm going to Paris. We won't get to see each other." I cried. "Katie, you'll see me on breaks. I'll fly to see you back here. And don't worry, you'll be with the love of your life in Paris! You'll love it there! I know you. And you love him. So how is it so hard?" he said. I kept quiet. I couldn't say anything and he knew too. He just put his shoulder around me and walked silently till we got back to my house. "Well, I'll see you at graduation. And I'll be here the day you leave. Because I can't have you leave without me saying goodbye." he smiled. I returned his smile and hugged him. "Goodbye Adam. Love you." I said. "Goodbye Katie, love you too. Have fun in Paris!" he smiled and let go. I watched him walk away. No.. He's finally leaving me.. My bestfriend. I won't see him till the end of the year. I start to tear up again, but wipe them away so no one will question me. I start to walk in and they yell at me about how long I was out. Andrea already left and Thomas was leaving. He kissed me and said goodbye and I love you. My parents kept yelling because they were worried. But I just kept walking to my room. Because in two weeks, I'll get away from them.
