"You're telling me," Sophie blinked, "that you have two guys crazy in love with you."
"Yes."
"And why is that a problem?"
"Soph," I whined, adjusting myself to sit crosslegged on my bed.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry!" Sophie held up her hands. "I just don't see it as a problem."
"Well," I groaned, falling backward, "it's awful."
"I can't relate." Sophie rolled her eyes. "I can't even find one boy to like me, let alone love me."
"Soph," I laughed. "They're all stupid."
"Not the point." I looked up at her as she folded her arms over her chest. "Can I have the one you don't want?"
"Which one do you want?" I laughed. "I'll take the other one."
There was a faint knock on the door, causing our laughing to quickly stop.
"Yeah?" I called out as the door opened slowly.
"I don't mean to interrupt..."
"You aren't," I promised Chase, holding my hand out.
"You talking about me?" Chase raised his eyebrows at Sophie, who instantly blushed.
"You? Never," Sophie shot back.
I raised my eyebrows at the sassiness that was Sophie. I had never seen her so confident or comfortable around a guy before. What had they talked about while I was with Luke? Chase definitely earned some bonus points for becoming instantaneous friends with my shy best friend.
"Can I steal you for just a minute?" Chase raised his eyebrows in my direction.
"Yeah." I looked over at Sophie as I stood up. "I'll be right back, okay?"
I followed Chase out of the room, hesitant about what he was going to say.
"Hi," he leaned down to kiss me, "you doing okay?"
"Yeah." I tucked a strand a hand behind my ear.
"Do you want to break up?" he blurted out.
He was just staring at me when I looked up at him hesitantly. I wasn't entirely sure where this was coming from, but I had my suspicions. I looked over my shoulder through the slightly cracked door at Sophie who was staring wide-eyed back at me.
"Chase," I shook my head, "don't talk like that."
"It's okay if you do."
"What?" I looked up at him again.
I felt slightly offended at just how willing Chase was to break things off with me.
"If you're not happy," he trailed off.
"I am happy," I promised.
"Carson, you literally drove here to tell your ex-boyfriend that you still love him."
"Chase," I whispered.
He leaned forward, pressing his lips on my forehead before whispering, "it's okay."
"Do you like her?" I snapped, stepping back away from him.
"What?"
"Do you?"
"Who?"
"Sophie." I stared at him.
He didn't say anything. His eyes just stayed focused on mine. I heard the door behind me creak open, and Sophie's quiet voice echoed around us.
"Do you?" she questioned
"Now you and Luke can be together." I shot Chase a look for that comment. "Isn't that what you wanted?"
"No," I shook my head quickly. "It isn't."
"I don't believe you," Sophie mumbled.
I watched in amazement, as she stepped forward, pressing her lips on Chase's. We hadn't even broken up officially yet! What kind of best friend would do that?
"Hey!" I screamed out.
I sat up quickly, startled. I was still dreaming as I slipped back into consciousness.
"What's wrong?!" Chase sat up quickly, looking around the room.
"Just a bad dream," I mumbled, still trying to catch my breath.
"C'mere," Chase whispered in a husky voice, still half asleep.
I laid down, resting my head on his chest as I felt him breathing. As he drifted back to sleep, I laid awake, letting my mind wander. I was so unsure about what I wanted coming back from Luke's that I was mentally exhausted. I happily took Chase up on his offer to cuddle up in my room and watch a movie. Naturally, I fell asleep instantly.
I definitely wasn't expecting to be woken up by a dream about my boyfriend dumping me for my best friend. I kept my head still on Chase's chest as I tried to figure out if this nightmare was trying to tell me that I really did want to be with Chase or if I was just imaging scenarios where Luke and I could be together again and it wouldn't be my fault.
I had never been so unsure of what I wanted in my entire life.
