" I feel honored for this award. I feel that I don't deserve it. Becoming an ambassador of your organization is a great responsibility. But never the less I'll do my best to deserve your trust. Thank you " Claps thundered as Lindsey went down the stage.
Some children hugged Lindsey as she went down. Some raise card boards saying " We love you Ate Lindsey " She even pose for a picture with some elderly residents of the orphanage.
Later that day she proceeded at her family's home. Lean and Leonard run to her immediately. Lean just ten years of age is already a few inches shorter than her. " Ate we miss you!" Leonard exclaimed " Oh really? " She got teary eyed " We have gifts for you" Lean informed her. Her brothers are sweet and very affectionate to her. " Oh thank you" She replied giving each of them a kiss on the head. " Where's Tita and Papa? " She asked. " They're on their way home now. Ate open our gifts " seven years old Leonard suggests " Alright young man" Lindsey responds. Following her two brothers to the living room. Then the boys handed her a huge box wrapped in Pink.
She sits on one one of the couch then she opened the neatly wrapped package. Inside it is a pair of brown teddy bear with caps the bears were holding arm to arm. "Oh thank you boys" Lindsey said. The boys hugged her. " Mama has a gift too" Lean said " Is that so?" Lindsey " Aha" Lean " Did she left it?" Lindsey " I guess she placed it on top of your bed " Leonard said. " Alright I'll check on them later " Lindsey.
Lindsey visits their family home on a regular basis. If her schedule permits she would drop by for a couple of hours. Sometimes she even spend the night at her room.
She cannot comprehend how the towering walls of their house brings her comfort.
Her stepmother's gift was placed on top her dresser it comes in a small box. It was a designers watch with diamonds. While her Papa left a gift check from a fine jewelry store. Her father's gift was as effortless as ever. She could imagine how her Papa would just sign it as if it is a check for monthly bills.
Her room is untouched. It still looks the same five years since she moved to her own space. The linens were of still the same colour peach. Her favorite. The Persian carpet is still there and even her doll house is still in excellent condition. She counted the dolls there are still forty of them. The dolls were her Papa's presents. He brought each of them from different countries he visits. And they are neatly arranged by order of size. Even her favorite bear stuff is still sitting on top of her study table.
She lied on her four poster bed. It still feels soft. She reminisced how the three of them used to share it as a family. Lindsey, Her Mama and Papa. How she would look at each of her parents when they read her bedtime stories during the earlier years of her life. And she remember so well how her Papa used to be loving and affectionate. In fact it was her
papa who used to put her to sleep. And during her very 1st TV appearance when she was six her papa was the one who accompanied her to the TV station.
A total irony of what he has become today. But everything changed when she turned eight.
She witness how her parents would argue each day over petty things. Until one night she was awakened by her mama's screams. Lindsey opened the door slightly. Her Papa was holding her mama by the neckline of her satin dress. " Lorenz take your hands of me! " Her Mama begged " How could you do this to me? I have loved you?" Her Papa cried " I'm sorry I don't love you anymore. Your career your ambitions have consumed you, I can't feel my worth in your life anymore" Her Mama said in tears. " Liar you have been fooling me all this time. Didn't you with that guy Bob!" Her Papa exclaimed in a thundering voice. " I'm sorry Lorenz" Her Mama cried.
" Enough Pia! What you have done is more than enough. Get out of this house and Get out of my life" Lorenz "
I will Lorenz but I won't leave with out Lindsey" Her Mama used to call her Lindsey as it is her favorite name but her Papa insisted his choice which is Luisa. " No you won't! What kind of life will you give my child? A life like yours? Living without means and being raised in a foul slum? Is that the kind of life you want for her!" Her Papa yelled " Lorenz you know I can't bear a child anymore. She is my life" Pia cried " No! Now get out!" Furious Lorenz pulled Pia towards the stairs. With her Papa's five foot ten frame her mama looked like a crumpled cloth. Lindsey cried silently she wants to stop their fighting but didn't know how. At that moment she called to her guardian angel to mediate between her Mama and Papa. But none came. She turned her back on the door and cried. Few minutes passed and she heard a loud deafening sound down the stairs.
The following day she didn't see her Papa neither her mama. Their household help were unusually silent even her yaya Nanay Ellen became reserve. No one knows where her parents went and None can answer of What happened last night or what the loud sound was all about.
A week had passed and her Papa is back and he was a different man. He became a stranger to Lindsey. She reached for their family photo. For years she have keep it under her beds cushion. It was taken during her seventh birthday. The three of them were all smiles. Her then thirty years old Mama is so pretty while her Papa who is twelve years senior of her mama Was trimmed and has smooth face unlike now that he has wrinkles over his forehead.
" Can't things just stay perfect? " She asked herself. If only genie or fairy godmothers are true. Lindsey could've wished for those happy days to come back and she would gladly give all her material possessions and fame in exchange for it.
She had fallen to sleep. She was awakened by her stepmothers message. " Lindsey please get up I prepared us lunch for your birthday and we have guests waiting for you. See us on the poolside dining. Happy Birthday" Her stepmother have been accommodating as ever. She treats her nicely too but that's all they have not become close nor comfortable with each other through the years. It's as if there is invisible wall between her and Tita Rita.
Their lunch was sumptuous. Her Tita Rita is an excellent cook a contrast of her mama who only knows how to fry. Their guests was her three uncles by her father's side some paternal cousins and her super best friend Joan who just came from Israel and proceeded immediately to her party and her manager Rain who came with her husband Joey. Her Papa came when lunch is already over. He opened the champagne for a toast before he gave the car key of the latest Subaru unit.
Lindsey want to call Aries at that moment and be with her, but she can't. Her father strongly opposes their relationship even from the beginning. She knew that bringing her boyfriend in would mean argument between her and Papa and she doesn't want to spoil this party.
